FRE 101 Elementary French I

Study of the fundamentals of the French language. The grammatical and conversational skills are taught in class and reinforced by the use of tapes. The emphasis is placed on actual communication, both written and verbal. Open to students who have one year of high school French or no previous knowledge of the language.

FRE 102 Elementary French II

Credits: 3.00

Introduction of the literary tenses and more complex grammatical structures. The use of the language in the classroom will be intensified, and more readings will be presented. Introduction to the culture of the French-speaking world. The program of slides and films will be continued. The approach is primarily conversational, and active participation of students is expected. Prerequisite: FRE 101 or equivalent

FRE 199 Ind Study in French

Credits: 3.00

This course provides the opportunity for a student work closely with a faculty member in a specialty area of French. The study plan must be developed by the supervising faculty member in collaboration with the student, and approved by the Humanities Division Dean. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor and the Dean.

FRE 201 Intermediate French I

Credits: 3.00

Continuation of the language structures. Dialogues and skits give the student practice in conversation and composition. Exploration of the culture of the French-speaking world will be continued. Prerequisite: FRE 102 or equivalent (2 years of high school French)

FRE 202 Intermediate French II

Credits: 3.00

A continuation of FRE 201, with readings of selected writers. Conversations and compositions in French related to the readings. Culture is emphasized throughout the semester. Prerequisite: FRE 201 or equivalent.

FRE 251 Advanced French I

Credits: 3.00

French culture will be the focus of the course. Brief oral and written presentations by the students, reinforced by the reading of selected literary texts, as well as by newspaper articles, slides, videos, and movies, will serve as the basis for class discussions in French. Prerequisite: FRE 202 or equivalent

A continuation and elaboration of FRE 251, with oral and written contributions by the students. Classes will be conducted in French, with emphasis on oral proficiency. Prerequisite: FRE 251 or equivalent

This course is tailored to the needs of the students with an emphasis on oral proficiency and awareness of French Culture. The French in Action program series serves as the basis of class conversation in French. Prerequisites: FRE 251 and FRE 252 or permission of the instructor
