GER 101 Elementary German I
Credits: 3.00An introduction to the elements of the German language: conversation, reading, and grammar. The course also serves to acquaint the student with the life and thought of the German people. Open to students with no previous knowledge of German or one year of high school German.
GER 102 Elementary German II
Credits: 3.00Grammatical and conversational practice is continued and supplemented by reading selections. Prerequisite: GER 101 or equivalent.
GER 111 The World of Germany I
Credits: 3.00Taught entirely in English and open to all students, this course offers a modern-day perspective of Germany and the social and cultural forces which shaped Germany's image. Germany's present institutions will be compared with those of the Hitler Era whenever possible. The student will become acquainted with a land of contrasts, not unlike our own, which has emerged from chaos to become one of Europe's most dynamic forces. Films, slides, and tapes will supplement lectures and class discussions.
GER 199 Ind Study in German
Credits: 3.00This course provides the opportunity for a student to work closely with a faculty member in a specialty area of German. The study plan must be developed by the supervising faculty member in collaboration with the student, and approved by the Humanities Division Dean. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor and the Dean.
GER 201 Intermediate German I
Credits: 3.00Discussions of modern German texts are accompanied by grammar review and practice in conversation and composition. The course consolidates the skills acquired in Elementary German as well as provides an introduction to German literature. Open to students with German I or two years of high school German. Prerequisite: GER 102 or equivalent (2 years of high school German)
GER 202 Intermediate German II
Credits: 3.00Continued conversation and composition practice, as well as readings of current interest. Prerequisite: GER 201 or equivalent
GER 251 Advanced German I
Credits: 3.00The course is tailored to fit the needs of the students, whether these are in the field of reading, writing, or conversation. Literary selections serve as the basis of class conversations in German. Lessons are conducted in an informal manner, with most conversations in German. Short reports are assigned in the course of the semester. Prerequisite: GER 202 or equivalent.
GER 252 Advanced German II
Credits: 3.00A continuation of GER 251 as well as advanced conversational practice. Prerequisite: GER 251 or equivalent
GER 299 Independent Study
