About the Course

The ORI 100 course is designed to help students become familiar with the Montgomery County Community College campus, to practice basic study skills, learn about the expectations and responsibilities of college life, and to provide personal, in-depth advising for first semester students. The course includes life skills such as time management and cultural diversity as well as more traditional study skills, such as test-taking strategies, note taking, reading, and learning styles. Students meet for 15 hours during the semester for class.
Outside of class, students receive personal advising and direction for any difficulties. ORI instructors are trained to help the new college student meet the demands of this new experience.
In addition, students will get guided tours of many of the facilities available for them at MCCC such as the Brendlinger Library and the Student Success Center.
Students will be encouraged to connect with MCCC through out-of-class activities. There are many free cultural events at the College that are often open to the public. There are also many student activities which include trivia quizzes, talent shows, and trips.
Requirements
The required textbook is available in the bookstore. It is also important for students to have and use their daily planner. Attendance is strictly enforced in this course, and students must complete the assigned coursework in a timely manner to receive credit. If ORI 100 is dropped or failed, a student must re-register and take the course the next semester.
Instructors
ORI 100 teachers come from varied backgrounds. Some are faculty members from English, reading, education and ESL. Others are staff members with an interest in teaching. Additionally, some administrators, advisors and counselors teach ORI 100. Instructors are trained and mentored during their first semester to ensure that the students receive quality teaching.
