EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION (A.A.S.)

Purpose:

The Early Childhood Education program is designed to prepare the
graduate for positions in nursery schools, private kindergartens
or child care centers. The courses in Early Childhood Education
program have been selected to provide a general and cultural
knowledge of the physical, social, emotional and intellectual
needs of the young child. Students spend a semester student
teaching in an early childhood environment at the end of the program.

The Early Childhood Education program is designed to train the
graduate to obtain a position upon completion.

Program Objectives:

The graduate should be able to:
--understand the cognitive, physical and social-emotional development
of young children
--effectively communicate with young children, their parents
and peers.
--demonstrate an awareness of how to create an appropriate
environment for young children.
--effectively design developmentally appropriate early childhood
curriculum for young children
--recognize signs of child abuse and understand a teacher's
responsibility for reporting suspected cases of child abuse.
--choose among career options open to a person with a background
in early childhood education.
--demonstrate skills necessary to find a job.
