CAO 111 Beginning Word Processing

Credits: 3.00

This course is designed to introduce basic computer functions and terminology and the "Windows" environment, to introduce the student to the "touch typing" method of inputting data, and to provide detailed instruction in the use of the most recent version of Microsoft Word software. A software tutorial is utilized to introduce the keyboard and to provide reinforcement and skill building. The course focuses on word processing concepts and functions. Completion of this course will prepare the student to continue with CAO 112, Advanced Word Processing. Note: This course provides an excellent introduction to computers and will prepare students with no computer experience to take CIS 110 - Management Information Systems.

CAO 112 Advanced Word Processing

Credits: 3.00

This course expands the word processing skills learned in CAO 111. (A select review of CAO 111 topics begins the course.) Advanced MS Word features that are introduced include advanced table functions, text columns, macros, merging, sort/select functions, styles, outlining, creating graphs, forms development, integration of Internet functions, and desktop publishing functions. Prerequisite: CAO 111 - Beginning Word Processing or permission of instructor.

CAO 161 Office Procedures I

Credits: 3.00

This capstone course helps the student understand various job functions and related skills in the office environment. Emphasis in placed on the interaction of people, equipment, and procedures in a variety of office environments. Creative thinking and problem solving skills prepare the student to work in a competitive environment. Note: This course should be taken in the final spring semester in the CAO program.

CAO 198 Coop Internship in CAO I

Credits: 3.00

This course consists of employment in a college-approved office to enable the student to gain insight into the operation of a modern office. The course requires a minimum of 15 hours per week which is supervised and coordinated by a faculty member. Students are rated on their job performance by the employer. (For full-time students with permission of instructor.) Prerequisite: Permission of coordinator.

CAO 224 Medical Terminology

Credits: 3.00

This course is designed to develop a basic understanding of human body systems and the medical vocabulary associated with these systems. While attaining a working knowledge of human anatomy, students will experience a word-building system comprised of medical prefixes, suffixes and work roots which will allow them to write and develop fundamental concepts for the meaning of various medical nomenclatures. Accurate spelling, medical definitions and medical abbreviations are key elements to this course. Cross-listed as HCP 224. Prerequisite: ENG 011 or ESL 011 or permission of the coordinator.

CAO 225 Health Insurance & Professional Billing

Credits: 3.00

This course is designed to familiarize the student with the health insurance industry and the proper submission of insurance claims. The student will first complete an overview of the Federal and State insurance guidelines and basic requirements for submission of claims. They will learn the ICD-9 and HCPCS coding systems, their application to claim filing, and guidelines for successful reimbursement. The student will study each of the most common insurance types, the most current effect of managed care on each carrier, and step-by-step billing instructions for primary and secondary payer status. Knowledge of medical and insurance terminology is a key component of this course. This course is cross-listed with HCP 225 Prerequisite: CAO/HCP 224 - Medical Terminology, or equivalent with permission of instructor or Coordinator.

CAO 243 Integrated Office Software Applications

Credits: 3.00

In order to further develop word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation graphics, and Internet skills, this course reviews, extends, integrates, and applies concepts previously learned. Desktop scanners and the Internet will be used to incorporate images into Microsoft Office documents. Decision making and critical thinking skills will be practiced through the use of simulations of typical documents and procedures as employed in the professional world. Prerequisite: CIS 110 or CAO 112

CAO 245 Desktop Publishing

Credits: 3.00

This course is designed for office professional staff and for personal use. Using Microsoft Publisher software, students will reinforce and apply Windows skills, publication design techniques, page set-up and document layout, and work with text and graphic elements in a wide variety of business and personal publications. This is primary a hands-on course.

CAO 251 Machine Transcription

Credits: 3.00

This course develops the ability to produce documents from machine-recorded dictation of general business and specialized (legal, medical, technical) business communications, refines language skills, presents the use of reference materials, and develops decision-making skills. Prerequisite: CAO 112 or permission of the instructor or coordinator. Note: Offered in the fall semester only.
