DHG 100 Prev. Oral Health Services I
Credits: 4.00A course designed to introduce the student dental hygienist to the practice of dental hygiene and the prevention of dental disease. Integration of emerging technologies, class discussion, case application, laboratory instruction and practice are use to provide the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform dental hygiene procedures.
DHG 101 Introduction to Prev Oral Health Service
Credits: 1.00The course provides an introduction to the profession of dental hygiene by building dental and dental anatomy vocabulary, introducing dental instruments, as well as covering ethical perspectives and workplace safety issues. Infection control, hazards management, and ergonomics are stressed.
DHG 111 Dental Anatomy
Credits: 2.00This course is designed to familiarize the dental hygiene student with all phases of dental anatomy. Topics of study include gross anatomy, nomenclature, eruption sequence, morphology and physiology of the oral structures with emphasis on the primary and permanent dentitions, occlusion, an overview of the temporomandibular joint, and anomalies of the oral structures. The coronal structure and root morphology for individual teeth will be addressed and related to direct patient care procedures.
DHG 113 Dental Histology & Embryology
Credits: 2.00This course is designed to introduce the student dental hygienist to the microscopic anatomy and development of the basic cells, tissues and organs of the oral cavity. Basic concepts of general histology and embryology will be presented, with emphasis on oral histology and oral and facial development.
DHG 151 Prev Oral Health Serv II-clin
Credits: 3.00Emphasis is placed on the educational and clinical services provided for patients once oral disease or abnormality has been identified. Measures to maintain oral health and prevent further damage to tissues are included. Students provide preventive oral health services to child and adult patients seen in the clinic. (This course may be taken on a Pass/No Pass (P/NP) basis only. Extramural sites are part of the clinical rotation. The grade will not affect grade point average).
DHG 152 Prev Oral Health Serv II-semin
Credits: 2.00A course designed to provide the dental hygiene student with the opportunity to expand his/her knowledge and experience in planning and providing oral preventive services. Topics include instrumentation, referral mechanisms, treatment planning, dental hygiene diagnosis and clinical procedures. Focus is placed on the student146s development of skills in communicating with and treating patients as well as functioning within the clinic in an efficient and effective manner. Co-requisite: DHG 151
DHG 155 Dental Radiology
Credits: 2.00This course is designed to help the dental hygiene student acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to produce dental radiographs of diagnostic quality with minimum patient exposure to radiation. Topics of study include the principles of radiation physics, radiation biology, radiation safety, radiographic technique, processing, patient management, quality assurance, patient selection criteria, mounting and evaluation, recognition of anatomic landmarks and common radiographic findings and alternate imaging modalities. Emphasis is placed on preparing the student to operate safely and competently in the clinic environment.
DHG 157 Oral Pathology
Credits: 2.00This course presents the basic concepts concerning the nature of disease with respect to etiology, the mechanisms of disease formation, and the body146s response to injury. In addition, the basic disease processes that affect the oral cavity are discussed in detail with emphasis on oral neoplasia and clinical recognition.
DHG 161 Periodontics I
Credits: 2.00This course covers the study of the microscopic and clinical aspects of the normal and diseased periodontal tissues. Utilizing the knowledge of normal tissues, the students will learn to recognize the changes that occur in periodontal disease at the clinical and microscopic level. Additionally, a review of root morphology precedes lectures and laboratory experience on the basic treatment of periodontal disease.
DHG 199 Ind. Study in Dental Hygiene
Credits: 3.00Designed to provide students with an opportunity to explore a specific area in the profession of dental hygiene on an independent basis with faculty consultation. The study to be undertaken is mutually agreed upon by the student and the Director of the Dental Hygiene Program.
DHG 221 Prev Oral Health Serv III-clin
Credits: 4.00Students continue primary and secondary preventive oral health measures with a variety of patients. Special emphasis is placed on clinical proficiency and development of professional judgment. Extramural sites are part of the clinical rotation. DHG 222 Prev Oral Health Serv III-sem
Credits: 2.00This course is designed to broaden the realm of clinical procedures performed by the dental hygienist. Co-requisite: DHG 221
DHG 224 Materials in Dentistry
Credits: 1.00This course is designed to provide students with a survey of the physical, mechanical, biological and chemical properties of dental materials, their composition, reasons for use, and proper techniques of manipulation and dental application. The scope of study includes gypsum products, impression materials, dental cements, amalgam and synthetic resins and gold and metal alloys.
DHG 225 Pharmacology
Credits: 2.00A course in basic pharmacology introduces the student to the terminology, pharmacological principles of drug action, and the therapeutic and toxicologic effects of clinically important drugs in medical and dental practice. Special emphasis will be give to drugs of importance inclinical dentistry. Drugs will be presented according to their pharmacological class and therapeutic use.
DHG 227 Med Emergencies in Dental Off.
Credits: 1.00The course uses a weekly lecture format and is designed to present the three basic components of emergency management - prevention, prompt recognition, and effective treatment of patients present for dental treatment in any dental setting.
DHG 251 Prev Oral Health Serv IV-(Clinic)
Credits: 4.00A continuation of DHG 221. Emphasis is on advanced clinical dental hygiene procedures. Clinical experiences emphasize treatment of a varied client population. Students provide services with emphasis on comprehensive care to child and adult clients at the campus146 dental facility and observe at community based dental sites. (This course must be taken on Pass/No Pass (P/NP) basis. The grade will not affect grade point average.) Co-requisite: DHG 252
DHG 252 Prev Oral Health Serv IV-semin
Credits: 1.00This course is designed to prepare students to make the transition into dental hygiene practice. Emphasis is placed on ethical and legal considerations, treatment planning and current issues in dental hygiene. Co-requisite: DHG 251
DHG 253 Community Dentistry
Credits: 2.00This course is designed to introduce the student dental hygienist to the knowledge and skills necessary to promote oral health in the community. Topics include an overview of public health and its relationship to community dental health, epidemiology and prevention or oral disease, factors affecting the delivery, financing and utilization of dental services, planning community dental programs, and basic research and statistical concepts. Student will apply course content to research and statistical concepts. Student will apply course content to assess, design, implement and evaluate a community dental health program.
DHG 261 Periodontics II
Credits: 2.00The course consists of lectures, laboratory and clinical sessions with patients. Major emphasis of the lectures will be on treatment planning (intaoral photographs, periodontal charting, occlusal analysis, patient education) and therapy (pain control, chemotherapeutic agents, periodontal surgery, periodontal packs, sutures) of the periodontal patient. During the clinical sessions the students will treat periodontal patients with direct supervision from the instructors.
DHG 262 Periodontics III
Credits: 1.00The course will coincide with the Periodontics Rotation in the 4th semester of the curriculum. The emphasis will be on the review of recent literature on selected topics vital to the current understanding periodontal disease and its treatment.
DHG 271 Professional Issues in Dental Hygiene I
Credits: 1.00The course is a self-directed, instructor guided research course. Students will choose from a variety of topics suggested by the instructor. The intent is to enhance basic knowledge in a variety of dental and dental hygiene topic areas. The topic list will be generated following evaluation of current research and issues in dentistry and dental hygiene, emphasis is placed on using technology in order to conduct research.
