EDU 100 Introduction to Education
Credits: 3.00A study of educational thought and practice, with emphasis on present-day problems and issues. Historical perspectives on education are also discussed. Field experience is required. This course has 20 hours of required observation. Students will be required to obtain child abuse and criminal clearances.
EDU 110 Issues in Day Care
Credits: 3.00This course introduces students to day care as a unique service delivery system for parents and young children. A major focus of the course is to relate the components of good day care to the developmental needs of children, as well as the educational techniques and principles. Areas to be emphasized include: goals of day care, funding, classroom management, working with parents, and the role of the caregiver.
EDU 114 Infant & Toddler Development
Credits: 3.00This course is designed to acquaint students and parents with the growth and developmental patterns of infants and toddlers. It will enable students to explore the manner in which children learn to relate to their environment. In addition, methods of stimulating and "teaching" infants and toddlers will be studied.
EDU 120 Teaching With Technology
Credits: 3.00This course provides teachers with an understanding of the computer as a tool in the classroom. Students learn how to use both the IBM and the Macintosh computers and examine available software. They will also learn how to survey and select well designed educational software for their classrooms. In addition, students will learn word processing skills.
EDU 125 Teaching with Games
Credits: 3.00This course enables the student to develop and construct learning games and activities that can be used in the classroom. Information will be presented by the instructor at the beginning of each class and games will be demonstrated and displayed. The remainder of the class period will be spent developing ideas, gathering materials and constructing games and activities.
EDU 140 Day Care Practicum
Credits: 6.00This course provides field experience for students in the Certificate Programs in Day Care. Students spend 15 hours per week in a day care center under the direction of a staff member. They learn how to communicate with young children, plan an appropriate program, establish a routine and deal effectively with parents. Students will be supervised by a faculty member from the college. Students are responsible for transportation.
EDU 151 Obser & Participation in Eleme
Credits: 3.00This course is designed for sophomore Elementary Education majors and teacher aides. Students will spend 15 hours each week observing and participating in a variety of activities in an elementary classroom. Student experience will include: (1) observing in the classroom; (2) assisting the teacher with the daily routine; (3) tutoring individual children; and (4) working with groups of children. A college supervisor will arrange student assignments in an appropriate school and provide supervision. Transportation is the responsibility of the student.
EDU 170 Issues for Paraprofessional in Education
Credits: 3.00This course is required in the program for Paraprofessionals in Education. The program satisfies the requirements for paraprofessionals in education designated by the ECS Special Report 2002, National Education Association, No Child Left Behind Act; NEA Government Relations March 2002 PUBLIC LAW 107-110. There are no prerequisites for this course. Students will focus on understanding their roles as paraprofessionals in education. Over the course of the semester students will be required to recognize, critically analyze, evaluate and manage topics pertaining to the responsibilities of the paraprofessional in education. This course will examine strategies and learning principles used in contemporary educational environments.
EDU 210 Teaching Young Children: Intro
Credits: 3.00This introduction to Early Childhood Education explores the qualities and actions of the teacher as they relate to classroom management, communication skills, discipline and programming. The role of play, room arrangement as well as developmental milestones will be addressed.
EDU 213 Working With Special Needs Children
Credits: 3.00An introductory course which focuses on special needs children. Educational programs that now exist will be examined. General considerations are made for acquiring a knowledge of definitions, terminology, assessment, diagnosis, and classification of exceptional children.
EDU 224 Music for Young Children
Credits: 3.00A study of the musical development of children and the materials that will best reveal the creativity in each child will be discussed. Topics covered include the child's voice and singing, listening, body movement and Orff based performance experiences. Students will learn how to make music an important addition to the curriculum.
EDU 225 Guiding Children's Reading Development
Credits: 3.00This course covers the full range of teaching reading from emergent literacy skills through elementary school. Included in the course are both theory and practical applications of emergent literacy, word recognition skills, different approaches to teach reading and diagnostic techniques. Students are given practical experience and learn to design reading lessons for children.
EDU 226 Art for Young Children
Credits: 3.00The developmental stages of children's art will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on the creative expression of young children through basic art media. Attention will be given to the correlation of art with other school activities.
EDU 227 Teaching Mathematics-Children
Credits: 3.00This course is designed to teach teachers how to teach mathematics from readiness through elementary school. Math readiness skills, the four basic math processes, fractions, geometry, decimals, probability and the metric system are covered. The course also teaches students to use manipulations in the teaching of mathematics.
EDU 228 Lit in Early Child & Ele Educa
Credits: 3.00This course will examine the history of children's literature in addition to making a comprehensive examination of current children's literature. The use of children's books to improve reading comprehension, instill moral values, and solve problems will be stressed. Unique ways of presenting literature through story-telling and dramatization will also be discussed.
EDU 229 Teaching Science-Pre-Sch/Elem
Credits: 3.00A course dealing with the content, methods and materials used in the teaching of science to children. Literature, programs, and activities in science will be explored. Students will learn to design appropriate science lessons.
EDU 233 Early Childhood Curric & Admin
Credits: 3.00This course will focus on early childhood curriculum and administrative procedures. Students will be expected to develop appropriate curricular materials to be used in an early childhood program. Emphasis is placed on thematic integration. Licensing and certification requirements will also be discussed. It is recommended that this course be taken in conjunction with EDU 140 or EDU 250.
EDU 250 Student Teaching
Credits: 6.00This course provides field experience for students in the Early Childhood program. Students are required to spend 15 hours per week observing, planning and teaching in an early childhood setting. the student works with an on-site cooperating teacher. A supervisor from the college will arrange placement of student teachers and oversee the field experience. Transportation is the responsibility of the student. This course should be taken at the end of the program unless the student has the permission of the Education Coordinator. (A student must get permission of student teaching supervisor or Chair of Social Science Division before registering for this course).
EDU 270 Field Experience for Paraprofessional in
Credits: 6.00Education This course serves as the culminating field experience for Paraprofessional in Education Program. Students will spend 15 hours per week in an educationl setting working under the direct supervision of a teacher. The student's responsibilities will vary depending on the particular field setting but could include any of the following: work with individual students or small groups on skill development or social skills, assist teacher in clerical duties as requested, assist teacher in creating a positive learning environment, assist teacher in assessment strategies, assist teacher in grading. A faculty member from MCCC will arrange the placement and will work closely with the student and teacher throughout the semester. A student who is already working in an education setting may use that setting for the field placement provided that individual arrangements are agreed upon by the MCCC faculty member, supervising teacher and student. PREREQUISITES: Students must have completed at least 45 credits in the "Paraprofessional in Education" program, or obtain permission of the instructor, in order to take this course.
EDU 280 Early Childhood Program Administration
Credits: 3.00This course is designed for individuals who are currently working as directors in the early childhood field, or for those who are preparing to assume administrative positions. Topics include local, state and national regulations and standards; program evaluation; effective supervision and mentoring of staff members; staff evaluation techniques; cultural sensitivity; and communicating with the community. Prerequisites: "Experience as a Director of a Childcare facility or permission of the Education Program coordinator; minimum of two years experience with young children is highly recommended."
EDU 281 Leadership in Early Childhood Education
Credits: 3.00This course is designed for individuals who are currently working as directors in the early childhood field, or for those who are preparing to assume administrative postions. Topics include professionalism; leadership models; mission statements and program objectives; staff development, the director's role in curriculum and assessment, inclusion; working with families, and the professional code of ethics. Prerequisites: Be in a position of Director or Assistant Director of a childcare facility or on a director track, or A.A.S. or B.S. in E.C.E.; or A.A.S. or B.S. in another field with 30 credits in E.C.E.
EDU 299 Independent Study in Education
Credits: 3.00This course enables a student to work individually with a faculty member on a mutually agreed upon project. Prior approval by Education Coordinator or Social Sciences Division Chairperson is necessary before registering for this course.
