GLG 105 Geology of Pennsylvania
Credits: 3.00Geology of Pennsylvania is an analysis of the geologic environment of Pennsylvania. It is designed to examine the behavior of streams, glaciers, landslides, and other surficial systems as well as to acquaint the student with mineral and fossil fuel resources, and depositional and deformational history of the bedrock of Pennsylvania. This course is a two week long course held during the summer sessions only. The first week consists of class meetings held on campus and local day-long trips; the second week is spent in the field observing various localities throughout the state. The student is responsible for personal expenses incurred during the four days and nights in the field. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Offered Summer 1, 2 week course.
GLG 115 Environmental Geology
Credits: 4.00An examination of geologic processes that have impact on humans and the impact that humans have on those processes. Topics include: coastal erosion, flooding, earthquakes, radon, the greenhouse effect, water quality, and waste disposal. For general science and non-science students as well as those pre- paring for careers in environmental areas or in geology. Will involve lecture, laboratory, and field trips.
GLG 120 Earth Science
Credits: 4.00Earth Science is a general survey course which includes the disciplines of astronomy, meteorology, oceanography, and geology. Topics such as cosmological theory, stellar evolution, weather forecasting, plate tectonics, earth structure, and earth history will be considered. This course is recommended to fulfill a laboratory science requirement for non-science majors who do not have a strong science background. Will involve lecture, laboratory, and field trips.
GLG 121 Intro to Astronomy
Credits: 4.00Introduction to Astronomy is a one-semester college-level course in basic descriptive astronomy. The course may be used as a laboratory science elective with the mathematical applications limited to basic algebra. The course explores a broad range of topics in astronomy, as well as concepts and principles in eleven major areas: understanding the sky, apparent motions of the planets, lights and atoms, the sun, the planets, telescopes, individual stars, the ecology of stars, galaxies, cosmology, and life in the universe. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on recurring scientific principles and the evidence that astronomers use to support their conclusions. The course also focuses on the importance of astronomy and shows how astronomers have come to know about the universe and how they seek answers to new questions. (Field trips to local planetarium and observatory are required.) Prerequisites: High School algebra and English, or MAT 011 and ENG 011 with a minimum grade of "C" or better.
GLG 151 Physical Geology
Credits: 4.00Physical Geology is a survey of the physical character of the earth. Topics of surficial geology to be examined include weathering and mechanisms of erosion--mass movement, streams, wind, glaciers, and waves. The internal character of the earth will be explored by studying heat flow, seismology, volcanism and plutonium, metamorphism, crustal deformation, and plate tectonics. Though this course and GLG 152 are designed to accommodate requirements of a prospective geology major, GLG 151 and GLG 152 should be considered by the student who needs two successive semesters of the same science for transfer purposes. Offered Fall Semester only.
GLG 152 Historical Geology
Credits: 4.00Historical Geology is an examination of the history of the earth as interpreted by the application of fundamental concepts of the physical earth developed in GLG 151. Specific evidence of the evolution of Eastern North America will be examined at selected field localities. In addition, special emphasis will be placed on the availability and utilization of mineral resources, water resources, and fossil fuels. Offered Spring Semester only. Prerequisite: GLG 151 or GLG 120
