JPN 101 Elementary Japanese I

Credits: 3.00

An introduction to the reading and writing of Hiragana, a phonetic alphabet, basic rules of sentence structure and conversation. Japanese culture and thought processes will be covered during the course. Video and audio tapes are used to learn both pronunciation and vocabulary. Open to students with no previous knowledge of the language.

JPN 102 Elementary Japanese II

Credits: 3.00

An introduction to the reading and writing of Katakana, a phonetic alphabet, and to some Kanji (ideograms). Further study of Japanese grammar and conversational skills and more complex sentence structures built on JPN 101. The use of video and audion tapes will be continued from JPN 101.

JPN 199 Independent Study in Japanese

Credits: 3.00

This course provides the opportunity for a student to work closely with a faculty member in a specialty area of Japanese. The study plan must be developed by the supervising faculty member in collaboration with the student, and approved by the Humanities Division Dean. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor and the Dean.

JPN 201 Intermediate Japanese I

Credits: 3.00

This course introduces students to conversational Japanese using the modules of the subjects. Using sentence patterns and common expressions, it stresses communication with Japanese people. An intensified practice of conversations, using the knowledge of basic vocabulary and grammar covered in JPN 101 and JPN 102. The conversational skills and vocabulary building will be enhanced by listening to accompanying audio tapes. The students will be encouraged to speak up their ideas using sentence patterns to participate in conversation in the class. Study of Kanji is introduced. Open to students with the knowledge of basic vocabulary and grammar of the Japanese language and the ability to read and write Hiragana and Katakana. Prerequisites: JPN 102 or equivalent, and permission of the instructor, and JPN 201 or equivalent, and permission of the instructor.

JPN 202 Intermediate Japanese II

Credits: 3.00

A continuation of JPN 201 with extensive practice in building vocabulary and conversational skills. The recognition of Kanji writing as well as advanced grammar will be covered as the conversations progress. Study of dialogues and creating skis give the student practice in conversation. Prerequisite: JPN 201 or equivalent, and permission of the instructor
