REA 009 Elements of Reading

Credits: 3.00

This is a basic course in reading to help students develop the skills of word recognition, word analysis, spelling, vocabulary development, and basic sentence and paragraph reading comprehension. An appreciation of reading as a basic tool of learning will be fostered.

REA 014 Vocabulary & Reading Comp. Develop. I

Credits: 3.00

This course is designed to increase the non-native English speaking student's general English vocabulary, so that he/she will be better able to comprehend written materials at the post-secondary level. Students will use texts of narrative non-fiction to build their knowledge of the American English language. Expanding vocabulary through a study of idioms, roots and affixes is also included. This course is cross listed with ESL 014.

REA 017 Vocabulary & Reading Comp. Develop. II

Credits: 3.00

This reading and comprehension course is designed to prepare the non-native English speaking student to ready himself/herself to succeed in a college curriculum. The materials are at an advanced level of vocabulary and comprehension and include fictional writings by recognized American authors. Extensive general vocabulary, as well as content course specific vocabulary, will be presented. This course is cross listed with ESL 017.

REA 018 Fundamentals of College Read.

Credits: 3.00

This course is designed to enable students to develop higher level reading comprehension skills necessary at the college level. Literal and interpretive comprehension of sentences, paragraphs and essays of increasingly complex materials are included. The development of a more extensive vocabulary is also stressed.

REA 101 College Reading I: Study Skill

Credits: 3.00

A study skills program that relates to college level courses and their materials. Development in reading perception, comprehension, vocabulary and the collateral skills of listening, spelling and writing are included. Study techniques that include note-taking and preparing for and taking examinations are part of this course. Prerequisite: Reading placement test recommendation above REA 010, REA 014, or REA 018 with a minimum grade of "C".
