SPA 101 Elementary Spanish I

A study of the fundamentals of Spanish grammar with exercises in speaking, as well as an introduction to Spanish history and culture through easy reading selections. Open to students with no previous training or one year of high school Spanish.

A continuation of SPA 101, with increased emphasis on reading and conversational skills. Prerequisite: SPA 101 or equivalent.

SPA 111 The World of Spain

Credits: 3.00

Taught entirely in English and open to all students, this course will provide an understanding of the forces that have molded the Spain of today and have influenced many aspects of our own society. The student will learn about the complex customs and personalities, and the unity and diversity of the Spanish people. Lectures and class discussions will be supplemented by audiovisual aids and individual research.

SPA 112 The World of Latin America

Credits: 3.00

This course, also taught in English, will introduce the student to a group of neighboring countries which are a vital concern to the United States. The diversity of each country, as well as, the unifying characteristics of personality, customs and culture in Latin America as a whole will be analyzed. Lectures, class discussion, films and other audiovisuals, as well as individual research, will be used.

SPA 127 Spanish/Health Care & Related

Credits: 3.00

A primarily conversational course designed to teach students to communicate with Spanish-speakers in health-related matters, as well as in situations involving emergencies, accidents, family and job problems. Professional manuals, pamphlets, newspaper articles and other pertinent materials will serve as the basis for instruction. Prerequisite: One year of Elementary Spanish or equivalent.

SPA 199 Independent Study in Spanish

Credits: 3.00

This course provides the opportunity for a student to work closely with a faculty member in a specialty area of Spanish. The study plan must be developed by the supervising faculty member in collaboration with the student, and approved by the Humanities Division Dean. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor and the Dean.

SPA 201 Intermediate Spanish I

Credits: 3.00

A concentrated review of Spanish grammar, as well as, exercises in speaking, reading and composition. Selected readings on Spanish culture and literature as a basis for developing skills. Prerequisite: SPA 102 or two years of high school Spanish.

SPA 202 Intermediate Spanish II

Credits: 3.00

A continuation of SPA 201 with extensive practice in selected readings, composition and conversation on a more advanced level. Prerequisite: SPA 201 or permission of instructor.

SPA 215 Spanish Conversation I

Credits: 3.00

Practical use of the language with emphasis on oral-aural techniques, leading toward fluency and correctness in speaking. Prerequisite: Intermediate Spanish or equivalent, or permission of the instructor.

SPA 216 Spanish Conversation II

Credits: 3.00

This course is a continuation of SPA 215 and provides practical use of the language with emphasis on oral-aural techniques, leading toward fluency and correctness in speaking. As a conversation course, most of the activities will be performed by the students. Prerequisite: SPA 215 or permission of the instructor.

SPA 251 Advanced Spanish I

Students will be acquainted with Spanish and Latin American culture by means of literary works, movies, video, slides and selected reading from current newspapers and magazines. Class discussions will be conducted in Spanish. A brief research paper, as well as several oral reports will be required. Prerequisite: SPA 202 or equivalent.

SPA 252 Advanced Spanish II

This course is an elaboration on the cultural themes treated in SPA 251, by way of class discussions, literary readings, and continued study of media sources. A brief research paper on some aspect of Spanish or Latin American culture will be required. Classes will be conducted in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPA 251 or equivalent.
