The DSL: Where Motivation and Commitment Create Success

The Developmental Studies Lab (DSL) provides students with an opportunity to master developmental English and math courses in a state of the art computer-mediated learning environment.

DSL courses meet in College Hall Room 321. Classes are scheduled to coordinate with other courses offered at the college. Since regular attendance is a must for a successful experience in this course, students are expected to attend the scheduled meeting of their class. In addition to class time, student may use DSL open lab times for additional tutoring or to work on their assignments.

  • In the DSL, student centeredness is the key. The DSL promotes an encouraging atmosphere to help students build self esteem and self direction.
  • Skill building is a goal of the DSL accomplished through highly structured assignments, computer delivered lessons, and one-to-one tutoring.
  • Because of the design of DSL courses, students move at their own pace. This means that students will move quickly through areas that they understand or spend more time on those areas that they find difficult.
  • Students who have passed courses in the DSL perform well when they move on to college-level courses. The strong foundation they build in the self-paced, mastery level approach of the DSL gives them the skills they need to continue their college careers.
