Meeting the two-day faculty development requirement
All 10- and 12-month faculty are required to complete 2 days of faculty development each contract year. For an activity to qualify as faculty development, it must meet one of the following standards:
- Enhance and support the teaching/learning process in specific disciplines and across disciplines
- Enhance and support the assessment of student learning
- Serve as the core for academic leadership
There are several avenues open to faculty to help them meet their contractual requirement:
1. Attend a CTL activity.
The Center for Teaching and Learning hosts numerous seminars and workshops each semester that are specific to the interests and needs of faculty. All activities run by the CTL may be used to meet part or in some cases, the entire two-day requirement.
The Center also advertises a number of faculty initiatives that can be used to fulfill this requirement. The Mentoring Program, Writer’s Conference, Issues and Responses, Tech Conference, Film Festival, Visiting Scholar, and Dean’s Lecture are some of the annual activities that meet the standard for faculty development.
Faculty and administrators can also work with the Coordinator of the CTL to develop a workshop or series of lectures that will be advertised through the Center and that meet the standards for faculty development.
2. Complete a continuing education or graduate credit course.
On completion of either type of credit-based faculty development activity, the faculty member will need to submit evidence of this completion to his or her direct supervisor.
3. Obtain approval of a non-CTL or course-related activity.
Faculty can apply for approval from their direct supervisor for those activities that are not covered in examples 1 and 2. Included here may be discipline-specific conferences, cultural activities held on campus, and/or off-campus lecture series. It is suggested that approval be given prior to the event/activity. Formula for converting activity hours to contractual hours
The College uses the following formula to convert activity hours to day requirement:
1-2 hours = ¼ day
2-3 hours = ½ day
3-4 hours = ¾ day
6.0 hours = 1 day
