LAL Tutoring and Schedules

The most recognizable and, perhaps, most valuable resources of the LAL is its people. Throughout the day, a staff of peer, paraprofessional, and professional tutors is available to answer questions and assist you in better understanding your course work. To see a tutor, all you need do is walk in and ask. A list of tutors, containing their names, courses they tutor, days, and hours they are on duty, is available at the front desk. No appointment is necessary. Just come in when you have some time and a question. The tutors will be happy to help you.

    Expectations For Students and Tutors

To ensure that use of LAL Tutoring Services is helpful and productive, we have compiled the following list of expectations for students and tutors. By complying with these expectations, tutors and students can work together to meet learning objectives for each tutoring session.

    Expectations for Tutored Students

    • Regularly attend class for the course(s) in which you are being tutored; understand that a tutoring session is never a replacement for attending class.
    • If an absence is unavoidable, read your textbook or review other materials prior to a tutoring session.
    • Base your questions on problems/material you have already reviewed in class and/or studied before the tutoring session. Always attempt the work prior to the tutoring session. Bring in all attempted work to aid the tutor in helping you; never bring blank assignments. Come prepared with your notes, books, an open mind, positive attitude, and a willingness to work.
    • Respect your tutor. Use appropriate language, exercise patience, and do not hold him/her responsible for your difficulties or frustrations.
    • Understand that your tutor will never do your work for you.

    Expectations for Tutors

    • Respect each student you tutor. Use appropriate language and exercise patience and sensitivity to students’ needs and difficulties.
    • Pay close attention to each student you tutor.
    • Never do a student’s work for him/her.
    • Never answer questions about material a student is not prepared to discuss.
    • Never “badmouth” a teacher or “take sides” regarding a student/teacher conflict; remain neutral and try to help student focus on the material and learning.
