Montgomery County Community College is pleased to present the spring installment of the interview/talk show program “Issues and Insights” on April 4 and 11 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in Science Center Auditorium 213, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell. The programs will be simulcast to the College’s West Campus in South Hall, room 221, 101 College Drive, Pottstown.
These installments of the “Issues and Insights” program are designed to provide the College students and community residents with the opportunity to expand their interest in and deepen their understanding of the challenges facing the United States in this election year.
On Wednesday, April 4, four panelists will examine “The Great Recession and the American Dream.” Cynthia Bashore, J.D., a Montgomery County lawyer specializing in family law and child advocacy, will address the legal implication of the recession. Dr. Lee Bender, professor of Economics, will focus on the economic aspects of the downturn. Dr. Sophia Demasi, associate professor of Sociology, will address the societal dimension of the crisis. Dr. Ann Marie Donohue, assistant professor of Psychology, will examine the impact of the great recession on individual psychology.
In addition to focusing on politics, this program also intends to demonstrate how different academic disciplines provide important insights into a common societal issue.
On Wednesday, April 11, three panelists will analyze “American Foreign Policy in Transition.” Dr. Lawrence Backlund, professor of History and specialist in modern European history, will provide a global perspective on American policy. Jodi Empol-Schwartz, assistant professor of Political Science with extensive experience in government-related work in Washington, will explain the “Obama Doctrine.” Dr. Lowell Young, a specialist on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s foreign policy, will assess American policy from an American historical perspective.
This year is the 25th anniversary of “Issues and Insights,” which is free and open to the public.
