One of the hottest sounds in contemporary jazz, David Sanchez will kick off the Lively Arts season at Montgomery County Community College on Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. in the Science Center Theater, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell. Tickets cost $25 for general admission, $20 for students and seniors and just $10 for children. For information and tickets, visit www.mc3.edu/campusLife/artsCulture or call 215-641-6518.
Born in Puerto Rico in the late 1960s, Sanchez was influenced at an early age by the jazz works of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. His big break came when he joined legend Dizzy Gillespie’s band the United Nation Orchestra. He continued to tour and record with him until Gillespie’s death in 1993. Since 1997, Sanchez has been nominated for eight Grammy awards, and has won two.
Sanchez’ latest album, "Cultural Survival," was recently nominated for a 2009 Latin Grammy. The album features the "Le Leyenda Del Canaveral," which he will showcase during the performance at the College. Described as a mammoth piece set to poetry written by his sister Margarita, Sanchez says the song is a "journey detailing the travels of African peoples who work on sugar cane plantations throughout Africa and the Caribbean." The song mixes African chants and beats mixed with his own signature Latin jazz sound.
