'Think Green' at Central Campus Community Day

Montgomery County Community College will host its 16th annual Community Day celebration in the quad at the College’s Central Campus, 340 DeKalb Pike in Blue Bell, on Oct. 3 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Building on the College’s commitment to sustainability, Community Day offers a full-day of family fun with special programming that promotes a safe and healthy environment. Admission is free of charge and is open to the public. For more information, visit the College’s website at www.mc3.edu.

Members of the College’s faculty will team up on Community Day to educate children and adults on "green "topics of the day, including environmental protection, organic foods and hybrid technology. Participants can also view the sky at in the College’s state-of-the-art observatory, and can experience demonstrations with advanced technologies from the top-ranked technologically-advanced community college in the country!

In celebrating the official start of the College’s intercollegiate athletics program, The Mustangs soccer teams will face off against opponents in games against Reading Area Community College and the Community College of Philadelphia. The women’s game starts at 11 a.m., and the men’s game begins at 1 p.m. Both games are free of charge and are open to the public.

Following the women’s soccer game, Mustangs Head Coach Tim McNally will conduct a free soccer clinic for kids ages 5-12 in the practice fields from 1-1:30 p.m. Participants will learn foot skills and feints. A limited number of #5 balls will be available for use, but participants are welcome to bring their own. Soccer coaches are encouraged to participate or observe. Pre-registration is requested by calling 215-619-7314.

Members of the Mustangs men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseballs team will also be on hand to provide recreational fun for children throughout the day as part of the College’s Community Day activities in the Quad.

Montgomery County Community College alumni and their families are invited to cheer on the Mustangs while enjoying a picnic next to the soccer fields. Sponsored by the College’s Alumni Association and free of charge to MCCC alumni, the picnic will run from noon-3 p.m. and will include hot dogs, hamburgers and root beer. To obtain a ticket for the picnic, along with a free gift, alumni should visit the Alumni Association table at Community Day.

Bigger and better than ever, this year’s Community Day will include a Music Festival for the first time. The festival is headlined by children’s pop-rock act Cat’s Pajamas. This popular band features elaborate puppets, props and costumes for the kids as well as a contemporary rock sound with a three-part harmony sure to please adults. The Music Festival will also include performances by local rock and acoustic acts, including Mike Libertore, the Matt Carlin Band and the College’s own student Jazz Ensemble.

Other Community Day attractions include moon bounce activities, pony rides, face painting, bowling, a kid’s craft show, an extensive health expo, a farmer’s market featuring locally-grown produce, and local food vendors.

In conjunction with Community Day, the College’s Exercise Science and Wellness students and Dance Club will sponsor their annual American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Walk. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m. with the walk starting promptly at 10 a.m. The 1.5-mile Heart Walk will be held rain on shine and will start at the main entrance of the College’s Physical Education Center, located off of Cathcart Road. Registration for the Walk is $5; however, participants are encouraged to raise pledges, with all proceeds benefiting the AHA. Walkers who raise $100 or more will receive a free T-shirt by mail from the AHA. Registration forms can be obtained in room 219 of the Physical Education Center or by calling 215-641-6511.
