Student-athletes from Montgomery County Community College participated in a number of community service projects this month.

As part of Montgomery County Community College’s 16th Annual Community Day on Oct. 3, 10 members of the Mustangs men’s soccer team, including Head Coach Andy Kelly, joined the American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Walk. The 1.5-mile walk was held to raise money and awareness for the AHA. The soccer team contributed to the effort, which drew 120 walkers and raised $980.00 for the cause.

On Oct. 5, eight student-athletes participated in the Montgomery County Community College Foundation’s 10th annual Scholarship Scramble. Joined by Athletic Director Bruce Bach, Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Steady Moono, and President of the College Dr. Karen Stout, the student-athletes helped the Foundation raise funding and support for student scholarships and programs.

Kelly Donohue, Coordinator of the Physical Education Center and Campus Recreation and Head Women’s Basketball Coach, commented on the involvement. "One of the goals of the Athletic Department is to encourage our student-athletes to get involved in the community."

Donohue's team and other Mustangs athletes will be donating their time and efforts during next month' Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. The student-athletes will be collecting canned goods donations in cooperation with Manna on Main and will be hosting Poverty Awareness Night at the men' basketball game to be held at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
