FRE 101 Elementary French I

Credits: 3.00

Study of the fundamentals of the French language. The grammatical and conversational skills are taught in class and reinforced by the use of tapes. The emphasis is placed on actual communication, both written and verbal. Open to students who have one year of high school French or no previous knowledge of the language. This course meets General Education Core Goal 12: Global Perspectives and Diversity

FRE 102 Elementary French II

Credits: 3.00

A continuation of FRE 101. The course will focus on mastering additional basic communicative situations in French by using a more complex sentence structure and different tenses. The systematic training in speaking, listening, writing, and reading, reinforced by the use of authentic audio and video material, will intensify the competence and the confidence in French. In addition, students will apply their knowledge about the culture in French speaking countries. Active participation of the students is required. This course meets General Education Core Goal 12: Global Perspectives and Diversity

FRE 190 Introductory French for Business

Credits: 3.00

A continuation of FRE101, focusing on the French language in the context of business without foregoing the necessary skills for daily life. The systematic presentation and analysis of each topic of the world of business will develop all four basic language skills: speaking, listening, writing, and reading. In addition, presentations of the latest trends in French business practice and culture, supported by selected sites on the internet, will help students to become up-to-date with French business practices in North America. The extensive use of audiovisual material will be continued. Active participation of the students is highly recommended.

FRE 199 Ind Study in French

Credits: 3.00

This course provides the opportunity for a student to work closely with a faculty member in a specialty area of French. The study plan must be developed by the supervising faculty member in collaboration with the student, and approved by the Humanities Division Dean. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor and the Dean.

FRE 201 Intermediate French I

Credits: 3.00

Continuation of the language structures. Dialogues and skits give the student practice in conversation and composition. Exploration of the culture of the French-speaking world will be continued. Prerequisite: FRE 102 or equivalent (2 years of high school French).

FRE 202 Intermediate French II

Credits: 3.00

A continuation of FRE 201, with readings of selected writers. Conversations and compositions in French related to the readings. Culture is emphasized throughout the semester. Prerequisite: FRE 201 or equivalent.

FRE 251 Advanced French I

Credits: 3.00

French culture will be the focus of the course. Brief oral and written presentations by the students, reinforced by the reading of selected literary texts, as well as by newspaper articles, slides, videos, and movies, will serve as the basis for class discussions in French. Prerequisite: FRE 202 or equivalent.

FRE 252 Advanced French II

Credits: 3.00

A continuation and elaboration of FRE 251, with oral and written contributions by the students. Classes will be conducted in French, with emphasis on oral proficiency. Prerequisite: FRE 251 or equivalent.

FRE 261 Advanced Conversation and Composition French

Credits: 3.00

This course is tailored to the needs of the students with an emphasis on oral proficiency and awareness of French Culture. The French in Action program series serves as the basis of class conversation in French. Prerequisites: FRE 251 and FRE 252 or permission of the instructor.

FRE 299 Ind Study in French

Credits: 3.00
