Business Administration AS

Purpose

The Business Administration program is designed primarily for those students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university and major in an area of business such as accounting, finance, international business, management, marketing, human resources management, information systems, etc.

Note: All courses taken as part of the Certificate in International Studies program will apply to the International Concentration.

Program Outcomes

A graduate should be able to:

  • interpret financial statements representing the profitability, liquidity, and solvency of the business organization using appropriate vocabulary and analytical skills.
  • collect, structure, and report accounting information relevant for managerial planning and decision making.
  • develop the vocabulary and analytical skills appropriate for understanding the macroeconomic environment of business (economic growth, inflation, unemployment).
  • develop the vocabulary and analytical skills appropriate for understanding the microeconomic environment of business (markets and competition).

TOTAL SEMESTER HOURS CREDIT: 60

1 Most four-year colleges of business prefer the Finite Math and Calculus for Business sequence (MAT 140 and MAT 142). A few require the more advanced mathematics sequence (MAT 170 or MAT 190 and MAT 201).

2 MGT 111, ACC 150, or MKT 111 are strongly recommended and transfer to most institutions. (Check with transfer institution.)

Students should confer with their advisor or a counselor before or during the first semester to be certain that the specific electives taken are the best choices for the four-year institutions of their choice.

International Concentration

  • Second Semester Core Goal 6 Elective—HIS 102 preferred.
  • Third Semester Elective and Fourth Semester Core Goal 12 Elective—Foreign Language (Students should check with their advisors regarding selection of foreign language courses, depending on their transfer institutions). Non-native English speakers may use English as their foreign language. They are required to take a speech and a literature course to complete requirements for this degree.
  • Third Semester Core Goal 7 Elective—must be chosen from among the following: ENG 222 Literature of the Western World II, FRE 111 or 112 The World of France I or II, MUS 110 Music Appreciation, MUS 112 African-American Traditions in American Music, PHI 215 Comparative Religions, SPA 111 The World of Spain or SPA 112 The World of Latin America.
  • Third Semester Core Goal 1b—must take the cross cultural section of SPC 111 Introduction to Speech Communication.
  • Fourth Semester Open Elective—must be chosen from among the following: Cultural Anthropology, Psychological Anthropology, Cultural Geography, Comparative Politics, or International Politics.
