Health Services Management AAS

Purpose

The Health Services Management Associates in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree provides the student with a broad, solid foundation for attaining an entry level clinical management position in a variety of health settings, including private and public practitioners’ offices, hospitals, holistic health practices, long-term care facilities, and health and wellness centers. The student is prepared to use critical thinking in making relevant management decisions in today’s dynamic and expanding health services environment.

Program Outcomes

A graduate should be able to:

  • demonstrate effective oral, written, and electronic communication skills appropriate to the health services management environment.
  • utilize critical thinking skills and ethical principles in managing business office situations including customer and personnel relationships.
  • apply business management principles and techniques to the dynamic and expanding health services environment.

The program provides a stackable educational pathway for the Medical Assisting graduates who would like to pursue additional educational opportunities and enhance their careers. They can apply all 34 Medical Assisting certificate credits to the A.A.S. degree in Health Services Management. This program would also be attractive to those without prior coursework who want to pursue a management degree and a career in healthcare management.

Concentration in Medical Coding leading to a Certificate of Completion

  • First Semester: CAO/HCP 224 Medical Terminology
  • Third Semester Elective: CAO/HCP 226 Principles of Medical Coding I
  • Fourth Semester Elective: CAO/HCP 227 Principles of Medical Coding II

The 9-credit Medical Coding Certificate of Completion prepares the student to use the most current data sets required by the Health Care Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to assign codes to diagnoses as well as to medical, surgical, and diagnostic procedures. The student learns medical codes used in billing and reimbursement. Successful completion of the Medical Coding Certificate of Completion provides eligibility for the American Academy of Professional Coder’s Certified Professional Coder (CPC) examination. Certified Professional Coders work within a variety of healthcare settings to review and assign correct coding of services, procedures and diagnoses for medical claims.

Students must complete CAO/HCP 224 prior to enrolling in CAO/HCP 226 Principles of Medical Coding I.

Students must complete CAO/HCP 226 Principles of Medical Coding I prior to enrolling in CAO/HCP 227 Principles of Medical Coding II.
