ESL Placement Testing

The LOEP test is required as a placement test for students who speak English as a Second Language. The TOEFL test is not required to enroll, and students will not be exempt from the ESL Placement testing based on their TOEFL scores.

The ESL Placement test has two parts.

  1. Essay: Students will be asked to write a paragraph within 35 minutes about a given topic. There will be a choice of three topics.
  2. LOEP computerized English as a Second language Placement Test covers 3 different areas.
    • Reading Comprehension
    • Grammar Skills
    • Language Usage

The LOEP Placement test is not timed.

Retesting

Students are allowed to retest once to possibly improve their ESL placement. Retests must be completed before the student starts an ESL class.

Test Results

The placement test results will be sent to students within a week after they complete the testing. After the final results, students should contact an ESL advisor in the Student Success Center to register for classes.
