Monnette Sudler's 4th Annual Philadelphia Guitar Summit
Saturday, December 15, 2012, 8 p.m.
Philadelphia has a wealth of guitar talent from diverse musical traditions. This summit gives students, musicians, and lovers of guitar music an opportunity to learn from world-class guitar masters. The Philadelphia Guitar Summit features guitarists from Philadelphia and beyond in a series of workshops culminating in an amazing concert. The summit features a variety of genre including jazz guitar, flamenco, blues, roots, and “free” music, and includes African string instruments, electronic applications, and advice on guitar purchasing, tuning, and maintenance.
The featured artist, Larry Coryell, is a pioneer of jazz-rock and deserves a special place in the history books. In the 1960s, he brought a unique sensibility to jazz electric guitar playing. Musician magazine named him to its list of 100 greatest guitarists alive today, and after releasing more than 60 albums as a leader and playing on dozens more as a sideman in the last 40 years, Coryell has definitely earned that honor. Exploring the sound of the six-string in an extraordinary number of settings, he's done straight-ahead jazz, classical-influenced solo guitar, funk- rock fusion, light pop, and guitar duos and trios with some of the top names in jazz.
