Betzwood Silent Film Festival

Nickelodeon Comedy Night

May 1, 2010 at 8 PM

You know you’re in trouble when: 1. You don’t see the steamroller coming; 2. Your engagement ring ends up submerged in custard; 3. One hundred dogs chase you all the way to the cemetery; 4. The maid you just hired is drunk and turns out to be a man. And this is just the beginning of the fun! Join us for an evening of silent comedies made by the Lubin Film Company at its studios in Philadelphia and at Betzwood in the years 1904-1916. Professor Joseph Eckhardt will discuss the films and the stars and directors who made them. And as always, the films will be accompanied live on the organ by the ever-popular Don Kinnier.

Bobby Zankel and the ensemble have commissioned composer/alto saxophonists Rudresh Mahanthrappa to write a piece for Warriors of the Wonderful Sound, the world class Philadelphia-based big band. Rudresh is an emerging jazz master on the alto saxophone, who has his own unique ways of extended the jazz language and range of possibilities. Mahanthrappa’s vast knowledge of a variety on Indian musical styles and forms is combined with a firm grounding in the jazz tradition.
