"Mr. Sánchez plays with unforced authority and a searching, smoldering cadence.” - The New York Times
One of the finest, most progressive players on the contemporary scene, David Sanchez earned his first Latin Grammy Award in 2004 for Best Instrumental Album . Sanchez distinct take on Latin jazz is one that draws heavily on Miles Davis and John Coltrane. As a part of his concert he will perform La Leyenda del Cañaveral , a suite originally commissioned by Chamber Music America’s New Works: Creation and Presentation Program. “La Leyenda del Canaveral” is particularly ambitious, colored by African-influenced percussion and chants, spirited post-bop interplay and the now yearning, now passionate sound of Sanchez’s tenor” says The Washington Post . His sound is hot, passionate and articulate…not to be missed!

Pat Martino has been recognized as one of the most exciting and virtuosic guitarists in jazz. With a distinctive, fat sound and gut-wrenching performances, he represents the best not just in jazz, but in music. He embodies thoughtful energy and soul. Martino has led a remarkable life. A Philadelphia native, he was exposed to and influenced by John Coltrane and Wes Montgomery. Having lived in Harlem he played with Charles Earland and involved with the “soul jazz” genre. In the 1980s he suffered a severe aneurysm, which left him with nearly total amnesia. He made a remarkable recovery for which he was honored with the NARAS “Heroes Award” in 2002. Pat Martino is truly a legendary musician.

Actors From The London Stage
King Lear
Friday, October 30, 2009 at 8 PM
Now in its 33rd year, Actors From The London Stage is one of the oldest established touring Shakespeare theater companies in the world. Based in England with academic tours booked through the auspices of Shakespeare at Notre Dame, this program is truly unique. Developed by Professor Homer Swander at the University of California-Santa Barbara and founded by the renowned British actor, Patrick Stewart, the one week residency program is truly an actor driven tour de force. Coming from such prestigious companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company; the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain; and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the classically trained actors devote a large part of their time to student and community interaction, making the work of Shakespeare come alive and more accessible to audiences, capping their visit with a five actor version of King Lear.
