Workshop Session One

10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Writer’s Block

“I Don’t Brake for Writer’s Block: Effective Techniques to Stay in High Gear” with Jerry Waxler M.S

Self-help strategies belong in every writer’s productivity kit. Jerry Waxler will show you how to select the ones that work best for you. You’ll learn to harness the actions and attitudes most effective for successful writing. And by donning your writer’s role, you will convert readers from judges into cheerleaders.

Memoir (Free Simulcast to Pottstown Campus)

“Place as Character in Memoir Writing” with Linda Wisniewski

Do certain places bring up strong memories for you? Whether it’s your hometown or your living room, a place can be a very important character in your memoir. We will read and discuss excerpts from published memoirs and experiment with short exercises for writing about place in your own life story.

Journalism

“Writing for Newspapers” with Larry Atkins

This workshop will focus on newspaper journalism: breaking in, the realities vs. the fantasies, the expectations of editors, deadlines, and the way writing for newspapers is vastly different from other kinds of writing in terms of style. We will discuss freelance opportunities with various newspaper departments.

Agent Appointments

Pre-registered conferees who are scheduled for an agent appointment will give a 5-minute oral proposal to a literary agent: Elaine P. English, Daniel Bial, Kae Tienstra, Jennifer DeChiara, or Kate Garrick.
