An introductory course that provides students with an overview of the historical perspective as well as current issues and practices related to special education. Students will learn about laws that affect students with special needs and the classification of exceptionalities identified by the laws. Students will acquire knowledge of definitions, terminology, and assessment tools that relate to special education. The focus will be on the types of accommodations and adaptation that a teacher should make to support students with special needs to ensure their success. Each student will be assigned to a public school special education classroom for the purpose of gaining a first-hand knowledge of the current state of the art of special education. Students will engage in observation hours during this course.
