Student Project Airs on WYBE

On January 27, 1972 the Pennsylvania State Police accepted 15 women into the 31st Academy class, to become the first state police agency in the nation to train and hire women in the same capacity as men. On July 7, 1972 14 women graduated as Troopers and were assigned to 11 troops across the state.

Retired Cpl. Ann Metcalf filmed and produced a 26 minute documentary The Original 14 recounting the history of those first women Troopers. It began as a student project at Montgomery County Community College and was featured as a work-in-progress at their Film Festival in March 2005, and is scheduled to be aired on WYBE-TV, Philadelphia, during June and July 2006. WYBE operates analog channel 35 and digital channel 34 in the Greater Philadelphia area.

The video includes comments from 8 of the original 14 women and retired police Commissioner Rocco P. Urella; and over 80 historical photographs and newspaper clippings.
