Academic Network
The academic network at Montgomery County Community College consists of 815 Dell Pentium PCs. There are 615 units located on the Central Campus in Blue Bell and 200 at the West Campus in Pottstown. There are close to 200 applications being served from four Compaq Proliant file servers. The applications are controlled on the desktop by Novell's ZEN product. The Compaq file servers connect at 200Mbps to a Cisco Catalyst 5500 Enterprise switch. Each PC has a dedicated 10Mbps connection to a Cisco 2800 series workgroup switch, which then connects back to the Catalyst 5500 at 100Mbps. The two campuses, separated by a distance of 30 miles, appear to the students as one network by using two T1 connections between sites.
All students are given a network ID. All student IDs are managed by Novell's NDS. Each student is given access to a dedicated T1 link to the internet, a home directory with dedicated storage space on the file server, and all applications related to their specific courses of study.
MCCC is always trying to stay on the leading edge of technology. Some of the newest high tech products in use on campus include IP video conferencing between both campuses, multimedia streaming featuring Real video and IPTV, Smartboards, and wireless LAN connections and access to Internet2.
In addition to providing the newest technology, we have partnered with many of the world's leading technology corporations to provide certified training. These corporations include Cisco Systems, Novell, and Microsoft.

Corporation in the United States and other countries. Many additional services are provided to students both on and off campus. Some of the off campus services include the e-learning via the web and the ability to access our web based student services from anywhere with an internet connection. These services allow students to find out course information over the web by connecting to our award winning web site. In addition to general course information, students can access a course syllabus, collect information about the availability of the course, and even register for the course on the web. If a student does not have access to the web from home, it is still possible to register without traveling to campus by simply using our phone registration system.
As always, the goal of Montgomery County Community College is not only to meet the students' computing needs of today, but to anticipate the needs for tomorrow.
