Study Strategies for Success
Welcome to the first workshop of the new academic year!! You will want to get a strong, positive start on your studies.Time Management
- Wake up 15 minutes earlier.
- Make out a weekly and semester schedule.
- Schedule time for fun.
- Study 2 hours for every 1 hour in class.
- Use waiting time.
- Avoid marathon study schedules.
- Be aware of distractions.
- Get off the phone.
- Do one more little thing before sleeping.
- Learn to say no.
Notetaking
Before the lecture:- Be prepared with student tools (pens, 11" x 8.5" notebook, textbook)

Read previous assignment.
This gives you an idea of new words and organization of material.
During the lecture:
- Sit up front.
- Acquire listening skills.
- Listen for teacher's signal words.
- Record notes in an organized form. Use an outline or recall clue system, abbreviations, main ideas, details, and examples.
After the lecture:
- Edit your notes.
- Fill in missing words.
- Correct misspelled words.
- Review your notes within 24 hours.
- Have a note buddy.
Reading Textbooks

- Become familiar with the
textbook. What is its organization? Does it have introductions,
headings, and summaries? -
Employ a system such as Pre-reading
or SQ3R.
S = Survey text (establish background)
Q = Question - ask questions to give purpose to reading
R = Read for answers
R = Recite the material you've just read
R = Review reading assignment - Read for short periods of time—section by section.
Test-Taking
Before the test:- Attend review sessions.
- Get enough sleep and nourishment.

Be prepared by getting
clothes, kids, transportation settled. This lowers anxiety.
Pack school bag the night before with necessary materials. - Know what kind of test. Objective tests (multiple choice, short answer, true/false) require memorization and recognition of the correct answer. Essay tests require analysis. Look at the large picture and see how pieces fit together.
During the test:
- Come to test on time.
- Look over test first. Read directions carefully.
- Start with easiest question first.
- Watch the time.
- Mark questions you don't know and look over later.
- Generally, don't erase answers.
- Answer every question.
After the test:
- Proofread test.
- Keep previous tests to learn about what needs improvement.
