Frequently Asked College Seminar -
ORI 100 Questions

Why is the ORI 100 course required for some students and voluntary for others?

ORI 100 is a required course for all students who place into two or more developmental (pre-college) courses as a result of the placement tests. Research indicates that students who take this course are more successful in persisting and achieving their academic goals no matter what their educational background has been. Because the course prepares students for college-level coursework, it is especially beneficial for students taking developmental courses. ORI 100 instructors concentrate on helping individual students stay in college and succeed by teaching success strategies, assisting with goal setting and educational planning, and working one-on-one to guide and encourage them throughout their first college experience.

When is the best time to take the ORI 100 course?

The earlier students take the course the better, preferably during or in the summer session prior to their first semester. ORI 100 is offered days and evenings in both summer sessions as well as during the fall and spring. Students may select sections that meet one day per week for the whole semester or twice a week for half of the semester.

How is the ORI 100 course different from other developmental or college-level courses?

ORI 100 prepares students in developmental (pre-college) courses or who have been out of school for a few years for college-level coursework. Although coursework and assignments are at the college-level, students are given intense, individual assistance by the course instructors who are also their advisors throughout the entire semester.

Will ORI 100 count towards graduation?

Students who successfully complete ORI 100 earn one credit towards graduation. For this reason, ORI 100 may be a good choice for students who are taking a two-credit course but need to fulfill a three-credit elective.

Will ORI 100 transfer to four-year colleges and universities?

ORI 100 transfers to many four-year institutions as an elective. It generally does not fulfill orientation course requirements, however, since these institutions usually include their particular campus' information in their orientation courses.

What will happen if I do not meet the ORI 100 requirement before graduation?

Students who are required to ORI 100 must successfully complete the course in order to graduate with a degree or certificate from MCCC.
