The Flu and Good Handwashing, Etc.
Many people are concerned about the current shortage in flu vaccine and their own susceptibility to getting the flu this year, because of not yet receiving the flu vaccine immunization.
While the flu vaccine is very helpful in reducing one's "catching" the flu, remember, there are many other things you should consider doing to protect yourself, whether you get the vaccine or not.
GOOD HANDWASHING is one of the most basic things all of us can do to protect from that dreaded bug and many others.
Wash your hands before preparing and eating meals. Be extra thorough if you wear rings, since bacteria can build up around and in the rings.
Certainly, wash your hands after using the bathroom.
Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth. Think about all of the things you touch every day and how easy it is to transfer the germs, these things carry, to your body.
AVOID SKIPPING MEALS AND DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS to keep your body nourished and hydrated.
PLAN YOUR DAILY SCHEDULE to allow time for rest. Even if your get the flu vaccine, if you ran your body down, your body's immune system may not be able to function adequately to fight infection.
EXERCISE REGULARLY to help better condition your body. Walking, in addition your normal routine, is a good way to do this.
REGULAR MEDICAL AND DENTAL CHECKUPS are advised to determine your body's baseline and ongoing condition. (Oftentimes, we do more to keep our vehicles in good shape and running condition, than we do our bodies. Yet, when the body breaks down, the vehicle sits in the driveway, because the driver - laid up in bed - is in no shape or condition to go anywhere.)
