Melanoma Awareness
No suntan is a safe/healthy tan!!!
As we find ourselves having to cover up to keep warm, I would like to recommend to everyone, to take a few moments in the pirvacy of your home to do a SKIN CHECK. this weekend, and thereafter, at least monthly.
Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer which, if not removed early while it is thin, spreads internally and usually is fatal. It is often ignored until it is too late because, in the early stages, it may look harmless and cause no discomfort.
Although it is rare in young children, melanoma occurs in every age group after puberty and is the most common cancer in young adults of ages 25 - 29.
The good news is that melanoma is easy to detect yourself at an early stage when it is thin and easily cured by simple, painless removal in a doctor's office. 10-minute monthly skin check may save your life or that of someone you love or care about.
Among African Americans, the average lifetime risk of melanoma is about 15 times lower than in the Caucasian population.
In the United States, the incidence of melanoma is about equal in males and females, BUT males have a higher death rate from melanoma, probably because they check their skin less frequently.
There is an excellent Website available to review additional information about Melanoma, as well as, learn how to do a skin check, including pictures of normal moles and abnormal or atypical moles.
The Website is - www.skincheck.com
This Website is funded by the Melanoma Education Fund - which was established by the family of Daniel Fine, a college student, who died of melanoma in October, 1998 at the age of 26.
Information on this Website is free to print and copy
and share with others.
