Collections/What's Available The Library contains a variety of materials. Our Online Public Access Catalog, also called iLink, contains records for books, government documents, periodical titles and audiovisual items. The Library maintains a Juvenile Collection of children's literature used in pre-school and elementary education, including all Caldecott and Newbery award books. The collection is shelved on the Main Level. Our circulating book collection is kept on two levels. Books classed A-HE are on the upper level while those classed HF-Z are on the lower level.

Reference In addition to general dictionaries and encyclopedias, the Library has a collection of resources for library research questions and general interest information in special subject encyclopedia, statistical sources, atlases, and materials on contemporary issues. Reference materials may NOT be borrowed. There is a team of reference librarians available to instruct students and patrons in library research strategies and assist with locating materials. Assistance is available nearly all hours the library is open, including evenings and weekends. Ask at the reference desk, call 215-641-6594, e-mail refdesk@mc3.edu or send an instant message through AIM to mccclibrarian.

Government Documents Our Library is the only library in the 13th Congressional District designated as a depository library for government information and publications. Our Government Documents paper collection is kept on the main level. You can search for these publications in WebCat. Most Government Documents circulate for a loan period of 1 week. Please ask at the Reference Desk if you are interested in utilizing online or statistical resources. Select GPO Access and utilize the government produced index to search a database of government publications.

Periodicals Magazines, journals, and newspapers are kept on the Main Level. We have current magazines for enjoyment reading or keeping up with current events, as well as some long back runs of titles that can be used for research assignments. There are also subscriptions to many local papers and the New York Times. Periodical and newspaper back issues of select titles are kept on microfilm. All periodicals and newspapers must be used in the library, because they cannot be checked out.

  • Periodicals are available in the following formats: current, bound, microfilm, storage, and electronic.
  • Current and bound periodicals are located on the shelves along the windows in the periodicals department.
  • The microfilm is located in the grey cabinets in the corner by the periodicals desk, near the microfilm machines.
  • If the periodical you are looking for is in storage, ask at the periodicals desk for assistance.
  • To find electronic periodicals, ask a librarian to show you the full-text databases and indexes on our library home page.

Reserve and Textbook Collection The Library maintains a limited collection of textbooks for courses taught each semester. The collection is located at the Circulation Desk. Materials must be used in the Library. The Reserve Collection is made up of resources that have been put on reserve by faculty for students to utilize during the current semester. Most materials are available for use in the Library only.

For Faculty

  • To put an item on reserve please contact the Circulation Desk at the library at which you would like the item to be available.
  • Reserve items are held for one semester. If you would like to renew the item for another semester, please contact the Circulation Desk.
  • If you wish to put an item on reserve it must either be available in our collection, or you must provide us with the copy to be put on reserve. If you would like us to order the item for the collection, please fill out a Materials Request form.
  • The textbook collection is not comprehensive. Unfortunately our budget does not cover all the textbooks needed for every class offered at MCCC. If you would like to request the books for your class be added to our textbook collection, please contact the Circulation Desk.

Sweitzer Memorial Collection The core of this special collection is made up of books donated by the family of Montgomery County Community College's third president, Dr. Edward M. Sweitzer. All of the books are on the subject of higher education administration with an emphasis on community colleges in the United States. New items for this collection will be added to the collection periodically. These materials may be borrowed for three weeks.
