Special Event: The African American Read-In
Please come to the Library's upstairs lounge on Monday, February 2nd from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. to observe African American History Month as we participate in "The African American Read-In." This national event makes literacy a significant part of African American History Month by celebrating the writings (fiction and non-fiction) of African Americans. The program will be led by Dr. Samuel Whyte and a group of student volunteers, from the Honors Program, who will begin by sharing their favorite writings.
PDC credit will be available for faculty. All members of our campus community are invited to come and participate by reading aloud or simply listening. Refreshments will be served!
Displays
Hopefully, you enjoyed looking at our Library displays last semester on "Harvesting Information," on the author, Joyce Carol Oates, and on John F. Kennedy. For February, we have a display honoring African American History month. Please come by and check it out, and watch for future displays commemorating Women's History Month (March) and Holocaust Remembrance Month (April).
National Library Week (April 18-24)
This special week, first sponsored in 1958, is a time to promote library use and to celebrate the contributions of libraries and librarians. Many people have fond memories of their experiences in libraries and the contributions that librarians have made to their lives. The January issue of American Libraries, the publication of the American Library Association (ALA), includes numerous quotes from various people who appreciate libraries:
"When I was 14, I walked into the Hazelwood Branch of the Carnegie Library on my way home from Louis Field with my basketball under my arm and changed my life. I discovered the Negro section of the library with its 30 or so books...But one thing I took beyond all others that that shelf of books gave me was the proof that it was possible to be a writer. I decided that that is what I wanted to be, and I began to become discriminate in my reading. I read books on history, sociology. I began to understand the world and the society in which I lived."
August Wilson, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, from his March 28, 1999 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette guest editorial, "Feed Your Mind, the Rest Will Follow.""I am proud to do what I can to support our libraries and their librarians. Without them, and without this basic American right to read a book - any book- regardless of one's socioeconomic status, we will surely be less free as a people. Freedom is only preserved when its citizens have total access to all information and the free flow of ideas."
Michael Moore, author and filmmaker, from a May 2003 statement on his $25,000 donation to ALA's Spectrum Scholarship Iniative."I used to go to the library all the time when I was a kid. As a teenager, I got a book on how to write jokes at the library, and that, in turn, launched my comedy career."
Drew Carey, actor and commedian."When you are growing up, there are two institutional places that affect you most powerfully -- the church, which belongs to God, and the public library, which belongs to you. The public library is a great equalizer."
Keith Richards, guitarist for The Rolling Stones."I'm of a fearsome mind to throw my arms around every living librarian who crosses my path, on behalf of the souls they never knew they saved."
Barbara Kingsolver, author.
