Wouldn’t it be great to study for the
GED in your area,
on your own schedule, at no cost? Well, now you can.
Montgomery County Community College, in cooperation with public
broadcasting station WHYY and the Montgomery County Workforce Investment
Board, is host to an independent study GED program at its West Campus
in Pottstown. The program brings together PBS instructional programs
previously available only through PBS stations or on video with
workbooks and supplemental online materials.
The West Campus Learning Assistance Lab is the College’s
center for the GED program. Students register with LAL Coordinator
Sandi Gill and are assessed to determine the approach that best
suits their needs. They receive a brief orientation to the easy-to-use
materials and then work at their own pace through the materials.
When students feel they are ready, they are referred to GED testing
centers in the area.
The WHYY GED program best serves independent learners who hope
to earn their GED, get a better job, or enroll in college classes.
Approximately 20 students have enrolled since the program’s
startup in January. Two of the earliest students have now passed
the GED test and received their state diplomas.

WEST LIBRARY
HOSTS FIRST PDC CLASS
by Sandra Atkinson, Librarian
Subject headings? Truncation? Nesting? These esoteric terms are
used in searching periodical databases, such as EBSCOhost. If you
aren't sure of their meaning, perhaps you should have been at the
PDC workshop held on Monday, August 18, at West Campus library!
The class was conducted by the Public Services Librarian, Sandra
Atkinson.
A small but interested group of adjunct faculty and administrators
learned how to search databases efficiently using these techniques
and others. It was the first PDC class conducted by West Campus
librarians but, hopefully, not the last.
