Since the publication of our last newsletter, the AV Library has added a wealth of world cinema on DVD to the collection. A few of our new titles are listed below. Please come in and check out these and other wonderful films which give insights into many cultures.
Abouna. DVD 923
This film, made in Chad , follows two young boys in their quest to find their father, who has abandoned them. They embark on a desperate quest to bring him home. (In Chad Arabic with English subtitles)
Andrei Rublev. DVD 901
Considered a classic by the Russian director, Andrei Tarkovsky, this film tells the story of the famed 15th century icon painter who survives the cruelties of medieval Russia to create great works of art. (In Russian, with English subtitles)
Caballos Salvajes (Wild Horses) DVD 809
A lively, poignant Argentine crime adventure about three fugitive rookie anarchists who transform themselves into media darlings after their botched robbery. (In Spanish, with English subtitles)
Checkpoint. DVD 933
Cinema verite documentary filmed between 2001 and 2003 at the Israeli checkpoints that Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza Strip must pass through to go about their daily activities.
The Chorus (Les Choristes) DVD 876
Unemployed music teacher, Clement Mathieu, becomes the supervisor at a boarding school for the rehabilitation of minors. Dismayed by the repressive administration, he works to positively transform the students' lives through music. (In French, with English subtitles)
Guantanamera. DVD 811
In this romantic comedy set in Cuba , a world-famous diva returns to her home town for an elegant reception and a surprise reunion with her once beloved, Candido. She suffers a heart attack and dies while in Candido's embrace. On her funeral procession back to Havana, her niece, Gina, a former professor blacklisted for political nonconformity, and her husband Adolfo, a tasteless government official, accompany the casket and meet one obstacle after another. As the cortege wends westward across Cuba, its path crosses that of Mariano, a truck driver, who has been in love with Gina for a long time. Life in contemporary Cuba is shown, as the funeral procession passes through the countryside. (In Spanish with English subtitles)
Goodbye Lenin! DVD 861
In East Berlin, the proud, socialist mother of main character, Alex, falls into a coma for eight months. When she wakes, her heart is weak, and so Alex has to keep the secret that the Berlin Wall has fallen and capitalism has triumphed. A major charade is mounted so that his mother does not find out that her beloved socialist state has crumbled. (In German, with English subtitles)
The Inheritance. DVD 902
A critically acclaimed Danish film in which the main character, Christoffer, answers the call of family obligation to return to his family's business after the death of his father. The film has been described as a “taut portrait of a man who stands by as he watches his own soul destroyed.” (Danish, Swedish, French, and Norwegian dialogue, with English subtitles)
The Sea Inside. DVD 815
Based on a profoundly moving, true story about Spaniard, Ramon Sampedro, a quadriplegic, who fought a 30-year battle to win the right to die with dignity. The film celebrates the nature of freedom and love, and the mystery and beauty of life. (In Spanish, with English subtitles)
The Seagull's Laughter. DVD 924
A film from Iceland, set in 1953. Freya, who had gone to America as an officer's bride, has returned home, a widow, to begin a new life. Now, a fashionable and beautiful young woman, she moves into a small house of distant relatives in a quiet fishing village, creating quite a stir. (Icelandic dialogue with subtitles in English)
The Snow Walker. DVD 926
When a plane carrying pilot, Charlie Halliday, and a sick, Inuit woman, Kanaalay, crashes hundreds of miles from civilization, they are at the mercy of nature's worst. Despite her sickness, Kanaalay teaches Charlie the skills he will need in order to survive, and he comes to respect her wisdom and her spirit. (In English)
Yellow Asphalt. DVD 897
The Bedouin people of Israel are the focus of this fact-based three-part story of the clash between the Bedouin culture and the Western introductions of the Israelis. Set in the Judean desert, using a cast of Bedouin actors. (In Hebrew and Arabic, with English subtitles)
Zelary. DVD 854
A Czech film which was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars in 2004. A romantic epic set during World War II in which Eliska, a member of the Resistance, is forced to flee to the village of Zelary. (In Czech, with English subtitles)

LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION TRIAL WITH ROSETTA STONE
New in the AV Library this fall is a trial of online instruction in Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic through the language instruction program, Rosetta Stone. Access to the program is through your email address, and is available for the semester, or longer if needed. For each of the languages, we are offering Levels 1 & 2 instruction.
