Story Time in the Library!
by Mary Beth Parkinson, Information Literacy Librarian
Since the summer of 2004, The Brendlinger Library has collaborated with the Children’s Center to offer weekly story time sessions for the children. This past summer, readers for our regular weekly story time sessions included library staff as well as members of the Distance Learning division. For our final summer session, my colleague, Lisa McColl, and I, collaborated on a story read with background music. While I read Little Bear’s Visit, by Else Holmelund, Lisa played her clarinet. The musical accompaniment to the story, which was composed by Cary Ratcliff for clarinet, enhances the story by using the versatility of the clarinet to capture the various moods and moments in the story including the dancing of a jig by the bears and the singing of a bird. Lisa and I brought in as many teddy bears as we could gather, and the children made them dance and tossed them in the air during the jig. The children really seemed to enjoy the experience, and we are planning to incorporate music in next summer’s story time sessions.
During the academic year (September – May), regular readers include College President, Karen Stout; Vice President and Provost, John Flynn; Associate Vice President, Joan Brookshire; and Vice President for Information Technology, Celeste Schwartz, as well as faculty, staff, and students enrolled in the Children’s Literature course as part of the Early Childhood Education program. We invite others among our College administration, faculty, and staff to participate in this program and select a Friday morning to read to the children. Sessions are usually held for about twenty minutes to a half hour beginning at 10:45 a.m. Share your love of children’s literature and reading, while creating fond memories, not only of the library experience, but also of Montgomery County Community College, for our youngest on campus!
