Electronic Resources and Services
by Gretchen Keer, Electronic Resources Librarian

The Libraries now have access to several new databases, including JSTOR, National Fire Protection Association Codes Online, and Homeland Security Digital Library.
JSTOR contains back issues to many important academic journals such as Ecology, American Economic Review, Feminist Studies, Film Quarterly, American Historical Review, Modern Language Journal, and many others. To access this database directly you can choose “JSTOR” from the list of databases on the library web site. You can also reach JSTOR articles through links provided in the results of some EBSCOHost searches.
The National Fire Protection Association Codes Online and Homeland Security Digital Library are databases that will be of particular interest to those taking or teaching public safety courses. These databases are also listed on the web site.
Also, please note that XReferPlus, the purveyor of some of our e-reference books, is now named Credo, and take a look at the new search interface in Lexis-Nexis.
And finally, in database news, keep an eye out for access to Gale’s Literary Resource Center, which is coming soon to Montgomery County Community College!
This semester, we are also adding a number of student computers. Twenty-five computers from the Learning Assistance Lab will be moving downstairs into the Periodicals section of The Brendlinger Library. Twelve of them have already been moved into place, and are available for use. As they did while residing in the LAL, these computers will continue to require college logins, and include productivity software such as Microsoft Office applications. The inclusion of these computers has necessitated a change in the configuration of the Periodicals area, so if you’re looking for something that’s moved, please inquire at either the Circulation or Reference desk.
We recently became a Cooperating Collection of the Foundation Center, which provides resources regarding grant writing, and have developed a web page in support of that endeavor. To see what’s available, click on “Grant Resources” on the Library web page. There are also two computers dedicated to Foundation Center searching, as well as a small print collection located on the main level of The Brendlinger Library, next to the Juvenile section. Ask at the Reference desk for more information.
Lastly, another neat new resource the Libraries are providing is the Business & Computer Science feed available from Blogos. Created and maintained by Lisa McColl, Database Management Librarian and liaison to the Business & Computer Science division, this feed will contain blog posts pertaining directly to new resources and services that relate to the needs of the division. If you need help subscribing to an RSS feed through a feed reader, please feel free to contact me by email (gkeer@mc3.edu) or phone (x6592).
