Interlibrary Loans Go “OCLC”

It's an online world, and the Library is now even more connected! The worldwide resources of the library cooperative called the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) are now available to MCCC faculty and students. OCLC acts as the “backbone” for requesting interlibrary loans from this vast network of libraries. The chances of finding that elusive book or article for your research have now increased greatly. The Reference Desks at both Central and West campuses handle these requests.

Note: All interlibrary requests must be in connection with MCCC course research (no personal research or recreational reading requests, please).

National Library Week – April 10 – 16, 2005

National Library Week is celebrated across the country every April. First sponsored in 1958, the observance marks the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians, and encourages the promotion of all types of libraries -- academic, special, public, and school. In 2005, National Library Week is being promoted with the slogan, “Something for everyone @ your library,” to proclaim that “libraries play a vital role in providing millions of people with the resources they need to live, learn and work in the 21 st century.” You will find the full version of the National Library Week 2005 proclamation at http://www.ala.org/ala/pio/campaign/nlw/nationallibraryweek.htm We invite you to come to the Brendlinger Library, especially during that week, to find out what materials and services we have to help you!

Quotes on the Importance of Libraries and Librarians…

“Going to the library builds a kid's imagination. Books help them discover themselves and the world.”
Mike Bordick, Baltimore Orioles All-star Shortstop.

“My guess is (that it will be) about 300 years until computers are as good as, say, your local reference library in search.”
Craig Silverstein, Director of Technology, Google.com.

“Those who declared librarians obsolete when the Internet rage first appeared are now red-faced. We need them more than ever. The Internet is full of ‘stuff' but its value and readability is often questionable. ‘Stuff' doesn't give you a competitive edge; high-quality related information does.”
Patricia Schroeder, President of the Association of American Publishers.

“What libraries give you is all three tenses – the past tense—the present tense in which we live and the future that we can only imagine. These places have teachers who are living and dead and we are lucky to have them. If I sit here and read Aristotle, he is speaking to me across a thousand years – more than a thousand years. That sense that I am in the company of the great greatest people who ever lived is a humbling experience but a liberating experience.”
Pete Hamill, columnist for the New York Daily News.

“A library is the delivery room for the birth of ideas, a place where history comes to life.”
Norman Cousins, author.

“All the riches in the world couldn't provide you with anything like the endless, incredible loot available at your local library. You can measure the awareness, the breadth and the wisdom of a civilization, a nation, a people by the priority given to preserving these repositories of all that we are, all that we were, or will be.”
Malcolm Forbes, publisher.
