    Happy New Year, and New Things Happening in the Libraries!!

    by Mary Lou Neighbour, AV Librarian

    Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
    The flying cloud, the frosty light:
    The year is dying in the night;
    Ring out wild bells and let him die.

    Ring out the old, ring in the new,
    Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
    The year is going, let him go;
    Ring out the false, ring in the true.

    Alfred, Lord Tennyson, In Memoriam, 1850.

    A new year and a new semester are upon us! We, in the Montgomery County Community College Libraries, wish all a happy new year and successful Spring semester. Continuing on from our introduction of new staff in last semester's N&Q, we want to tell you about additional new staff, new services, new hours, and new plans.

    First of all, we have another new staff member to introduce to you. Her name is Lisa McColl. She joined our staff this past November as Database Management Librarian. As such, she is involved with the cataloging of print and electronic resources as well as the maintenance of the online catalog database. She replaces Shelby Martin, who retired last June as Head Cataloger.

    Lisa McColl

    Lisa has a BA in Music, and a Minor in English, from Ithaca College; an MA in Music from Florida State University; and an MS in Library Science from Clarion State University. Prior to coming to Montgomery County Community College, she was Supervisor of Technical Services for Ryan Memorial Library, St. Charles Seminary, Wynnewood, from 2000 – 2005. While at St. Charles, Lisa was co-author of an article, “Tailoring Oversized Courseware to Fit Our Small Library” in Computers in Libraries, 24, no. 8 (2004). From 1995 – 2000, Lisa was the Director of Institutional Sales, Gene’s Books in King of Prussia. Before that, she was a private music teacher, her instrument being the clarinet. She is a member of the Pottstown Symphony, and is currently learning to play piano and the guitar. Her husband, Ron, is an English teacher at Phoenixville High School.

    Lisa says that she loves working here at the College. She has found everyone in the Library very helpful and eager to work together to move things forward and make improvements. One task that Lisa has tackled since she has been here is adding bibliographic records for electronic books and e-reference books to our online catalog. At this point, you can search the catalog for 200 e-books and, then, access them online by clicking on the link in the catalog record. Reference Librarian, Jim Frutchey, in “From the Central Reference Desk” in this issue of N&Q, will give you more details about these new e-books and electronic reference sources now available to you.

    We also have a new way of sending overdue notices. Full-time faculty, staff, and administrators will receive overdue notices via email. In the future, the students, also, will be receiving the notices this way. No more snail mail!! Another new service, electronic reserves, is on the horizon for the future.

    New, starting this Spring semester, the AV Library has the same hours as the main Brendlinger Library. AV will open at 7:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and will stay open until 5:00 p.m. on Fridays. No more confusion about the former slight difference in hours. In addition, the Brendlinger Library Reference Desk is now staffed by a professional librarian starting at 7:30 a.m., rather than at 8:00 a.m., as in the past.

    And, finally, a number of the Library staff have been working on planning for the renovation and expansion of the Brendlinger and AV Libraries, which is to take place in the future. We have had planning meetings and made visits to area academic libraries which have been built recently or had recent renovations. Thus far, we have made field trips to Arcadia, St. Charles, and Reading Area Community College. This is just the start of what will be an exciting process. We look forward to working on the plans for the new, improved Brendlinger and AV Library facilities.

    Thus, there are a lot of new things happening in the Libraries this new year of 2006. Stay tuned to learn of other new staff, services, and resources to come! We are always looking for better ways to serve the College and community.
