Library is now a Cooperating Collection of the Foundation Center

by Mary Lou Neighbour, AV Librarian

On January 9, there was a ribbon cutting unveiling The Brendlinger Library as a Cooperating Collection of the Foundation Center. Attending the event were more than 50 representatives from the North Penn nonprofit community. This valuable association of the Foundation Center with the College and the availability of these useful research materials are thanks to the generosity of the North Penn Community Health Foundation.

As described on their website, the mission of the Foundation Center is to “strengthen the nonprofit sector by advancing knowledge about U.S. philanthropy. Established in 1956, and today supported by more than 600 foundations, the Foundation Center is the nation’s leading authority on philanthropy, connecting nonprofits and the grantmakers supporting them to tools they can use and information they can trust.” The Center maintains the most comprehensive database on U.S. grantmakers and their grants. It offers “a robust, accessible knowledge bank” for the nonprofit sector. There are more than 300 Cooperating Collections of the Foundation Center across the U.S.

In the Brendlinger Library, the Collection is housed on the main floor. There is a core collection of printed materials which will be added to regularly. There are also two computers, placed near the print collection, for grant research. The online database is only accessible from computers in the Library. The librarian at the Reference Desk on the main floor can log-in patrons who want to use the online database. The librarians also will answer general questions regarding the Collection and database.

For more in-depth questions, please contact Lawrence Greene, Archives and Special Collections Librarian, who oversees the Cooperating Collection (lgreene@mc3.edu or 215-641-7352). During the year, specialists will be giving two grant-writing seminars in the library to offer assistance on writing grants. If you would like to be on the mailing list for the seminars, please let Lawrence know. For further information on the Collection, see the Library web pages at http://www.mc3.edu/sa/lib/foundation/.

The Cooperating Collection of the Foundation Center is an outstanding resource for the College and larger county community. Kudos to Director of Libraries, Diane Lovelace, for obtaining the grant, and thanks to the North Penn Community Health Foundation and the Foundation Center for making it possible.
