Story Time in the Library!
Since the summer of 2004, The Brendlinger Library has collaborated with the Children’s Center to offer weekly story time sessions. Story time sessions are offered each Friday of the Academic year and on Wednesday mornings in the summer for the youngest members of our College community—the children of our Children’s Center whose parents are our students, faculty, and staff. We invite interested faculty, staff, as well as students enrolled in the Literature in Early Childhood course, to share your love of children’s literature and read to the children.
As reflected in the photo below, the Library had a very special guest reader this past fall when Senator John Rafferty came to read! He and the children had a wonderful time as he read Alphabet Adventure by Audrey and Bruce Wood. The Senator donated this and another title by this author/illustrator team, Silly Sally, to our children’s collection. We very much appreciate these donations as well as the time the Senator took from his busy schedule to visit us in support of children’s literacy.

And then, this Spring semester, we had another very special guest reader, College President, Karen Stout. Dr. Stout has been a regular reader at Story Time in the Library since its inception. In the photos below, you can see the delight of the reader as well as the avid concentration of the children!

Special Events in the Library
The Brendlinger Library celebrated Black History month on Tuesday, February 6 when it hosted Peter Scheponik’s Poetry class for readings of selected works of African American poets. Peter Scheponik’s Poetry classes offer readings in the Library each semester to share the work of favorite poets as well as their own poetry. The program on February 6th allowed the students to explore the poetry of several of our great African American poets as well as an opportunity to practice their presentation skills.

New Book Group
The Brendlinger Library is pleased to announce its new book group and welcomes faculty, staff, students, and members of our surrounding community to share their passion for books and reading. Our first meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 20 from 2:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. for a discussion of Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven E. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. Marc Schuster, English faculty, will lead the discussion. Those attending may offer suggestions for future selections.
National Library Week: April 15 – 21, 2007
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. In 2007, National Library Week will be celebrated with the theme, “Come Together @ Your Library.” Please make an effort during that week, especially, to come to our libraries—The Brendlinger, AV, or West—to take advantage of all we have to offer.
Survey: How Are We Doing?
As part of having a library consultant, Jay Lucker, create a report about the Libraries in 2001, we conducted a survey of faculty, students, staff, and the public that year. From it, we determined how well we were doing in terms of collections, services and environment. Jay Lucker is returning to the College this Spring as a follow-up to his initial report. We are going to be conducting a similar survey again to see if we have improved and where we can make improvements. The survey will be conducted during a week in March and will be available for completion in paper or online formats. When we ask for your participation and feedback, please fill out the survey so that we will know how we are doing and what we can do better. Thanks!
