One reference book that will provide you with background information for your chosen author is the Cyclopedia of World Authors.
Check the Resource Guides for Short Stories, Drama, or Poetry for a listing of additional reference books containing bibliographic as well as critical information.
You can also use an electronic reference book.
From Electronic Resources on the Library web page select NetLibrary eBooks. Select 'Reference Center.' Click the '+' sign next to Literature. This will produce a list of reference works related to literature. For research on Eudora Welty click Notable American Novelists. Scroll down the list of authors to the left to select Eudora Welty. Select a topic such as 'analysis' or 'biography' from the next screen.
You can also try searching two databases that may provide you with biographical and critical information: Contemporary Authors and Biographies Plus.
You can also ask for assistance in identifying and locating an appropriate subject encyclopedia.
