The Meridian Club of Montgomery County Community College was established in December 1969 under the guidance of Professor of Reading and Study Skills Julia Buzby DeGrendele. During her early years at the College, Ms. DeGrendele became increasingly interested in the growing number of older students on campus. This became her focus. From her conversations, she sensed a need to organize a non-traditional student club, the object of which was to provide an opportunity for older students who were returning to college after a long period of time, or who were beginning college at an age higher than the average, to meet, socialize, and learn from each other. This non-traditional club would also provide a support system whereby students could discuss concerns with others similar in age, home responsibilities and other life experiences. Subsequently, the Meridian Club was established. The West Campus Meridian Club was reactivated during the Fall 2003 Semester after being inactive for about a year and a half. The Club’s Constitution was updated and approved by the West Campus SGA in November. |
