Floor Hockey - Rules

Eligibility

    • All players must be registered MCCC students.
    • All players must be registered on their official team roster (team captain is responsible for updating their teams roster).

Equipment

    • All players must have mouth pieces.
    • Sneakers must be worn.
    • Street clothes are not allowed.
    • Sticks must be taped with white athletic tape.
    • Goalies are responsible for their equipment.

Players

    • A team will consist of a minimum of 5 players and a maximum of 10.
    • A team may start and play with a minimum of 4 players.

Forfeits

    • Game time is forfeit time. All teams and players must be signed in and ready to play by game time.
    • Game time is 12:30pm.
    • In order to receive a forfeit, the opposing team must be signed in and ready to play by game time.
    • Two (2) forfeits during the season will result in the team missing the playoffs.

Play

    • The game will consist of three 12-minute periods. All tied games will stand. No overtime during the regular season.
    • Time will stop for face-offs and penalties during the last 2-minutes of the third period if there is a two goal difference.
    • Teams are allowed 1 time-out per game.
    • Unsportsmanlike conduct or roughness will result in an immediate ejection from the game. The player must leave the gym.
    • A 10-goal mercy rule will be in effect after 5-minutes in the third period.
    • Fighting will result in an immediate ejection from the league and suspension from all Intramural Athletics. Fighting will result in disciplinary action by the College and the Dean of Student Affairs.
    • A face-off is used to begin each period and after each goal.
    • Offsides is the center line for both teams.
    • Checking and unnecessary body contact will not be tolerated. This is a non-contact league.
    • No icing.
    • Goalies must play the puck within 3-seconds of catching the ball.
    • At no time during play are sticks allowed to be horizontal to the floor.
    • Substitutions may be made at any time on the fly.

Goals

    • The ball must completely cross the goal line to be counted as a goal.
    • Goals may be scored from anywhere. Goals are not counted if the stick blade is above waist level, kicked in, thrown in or an offensive player in the crease.
    • If a defenseman throws their stick to prevent a goal, a goal will be awarded to the offensive team.

Minor Penalties
All Minor penalties carry 2-minute penalty
Minor penalties include:
Holding
Stick above waist level
Horizontal stick
Kicking/throwing the ball
Interference
Moving the net by a defensive player during an attempted shot by offense.
Contact with the goalie

    • Minor penalties expire when the advantaged team scores.
    • Penalties carry over to next period.
    • Players who receive 3-minor penalties will be ejected from the game.

Major Penalties
All major penalties carry a 5-minute penalty.
Major penalties include:
Tripping
Elbowing
Throwing a stick or equipment
Unnecessary contact or checking
Holding
Hooking

    • Major penalties expire after 5-minutes, not when the opposing team scores.
    • Penalties carry over to next period.
    • Players who receive 2-major penalties will be ejected from the game.

Double Major Penalties
All major penalties carry automatic ejection and suspension.
Double major penalties include:
Fighting
Unnecessary roughness
Intentional checking/roughing
Verbal abuse of referees, supervisors, players, and spectators.
Any unsportsmanlike conduct that the referee or supervisor feels warrants ejection.


Player Conduct


Intramural Athletics are for the fun and enjoyment of everyone, including referees and spectators.

    • Team Captains are responsible for the conduct of their team and spectators.
    • Only the team captains or designated coach may question referees or supervisors during play.
    • Acts of unsportsmanlike conduct including: unnecessary roughness, arguing with the referees, supervisors, or opponents will result in an immediate ejection. Two ejections will result in a suspension from the league.
    • Ejected players will serve a 1 game suspension prior to returning to play. Other penalties may include: probation or suspension from Intramural Athletics.
    • Ejected players must leave the gymnasium for the remainder of the game.

Miscellaneous

    • All players must present their MCCC ID prior to the start of the game.
    • All players must enter their name and ID number on the sign in sheet prior to entering the game.
    • All fans must remain out of play.
    • The Intramural Office does not provide insurance and assumes no responsibility for injuries occurring during Intramural Athletics. For Health insurance information contact Health Services in College Hall 221.
    • All injuries no matter how minor must be reported to the supervisor.

Playoffs

    • All teams who complete the regular season qualify for the playoff tournament. Teams with 2 forfeits are not eligible.
    • The playoff schedule will be posted 1 week prior to the start of the playoffs.
