In 2007, Brittany took the loosely-knit Central Campus International Club under her wing. With only 10 members, the club elected her as the first president in spring 2008. Since that time, the International Club has grown to over 50 members, and held its first-ever International Night this past spring, during which they raised money for earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

“The International Club is important to our MCCC community … because we are steadily helping to eliminate stereotypes cross-culturally,” said Brittany.

As part of the International community on campus, Brittany served as peer mentor for international and ELL (English-language learners) students, helping them to navigate through their first college campus experiences.

“You have the ability to change another student's attitude about college, and enable them to have a brighter outlook on their college experience,” Brittany explained.

She said that many international students are hesitant about starting at a community college rather than a larger university. However, their fears vanish once she takes them on a tour of campus.

“There are usually a lot of excited smiles and beaming eyes.”

Brittany was also highly involved in the College’s Theatre Arts productions, which fueled her passion for the broader arts. She performed twice in the College’s Performing Arts Showcase, once acting out the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet and a second time with the Guitar Ensemble.

In addition, Brittany has participated in two campus plays with the Drama Club, leading her to consider acting as a career. She plans to audition for UCLA’s Theatre Arts program in January to pursue acting and filmmaking.

With many roles on and off campus, Brittany finds stability in her faith.

“My faith allows me to persevere and retain a strong sense of optimism,” she said. “Just knowing that I can dream big and set my goals high gives me the drive I need to succeed.”

“There are not enough words to describe just how incredible my experience here at [MCCC] has been,” she added. “But don't worry, when I win my Academy Award, I'll be sure to thank Montgomery County Community College for helping me get to where I am!”
