In The Spotlight ...
Kimberly Lane
Dental Hygiene Major
Class Of 2010
Norristown
Even before sophomore Kimberly Lane enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program at Montgomery County Community College, she was concerned about the dental health of children, especially those in Norristown where she currently resides.
Dental Hygiene Program Director Jenny Sheaffer recalls Kimberly’s passion for community outreach during their first meeting.
“Kimberly came to my office as a first-year student with the idea of offering a sealant program for children in Norristown,” said Sheaffer. “She is very passionate and committed to giving back to her community.”
Kimberly, who will graduate with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Dental Hygiene in May 2010, submitted a proposal to the Municipal Council of Norristown requesting funds for a sealant program for Norristown children. The request was approved, and she was invited to the Council’s December meeting to accept the check. In addition Kimberly obtained generous donations from both Henry Schein and Colgate for dental supplies for the event.
“Kimberly and fellow classmate Pamela Foor are doing all the work to put together the sealant event,” said Sheaffer. “They are marketing the program and soliciting all of the volunteers. Kimberly also connected with the Montgomery-Bucks Dental Hygiene Association, which is providing toothbrush take-aways for the participating children.”
The one-day sealant program is scheduled in May and is free to children ages 6-14 from the Municipality of Norristown, by appointment.
Kimberly has worked as a dental assistant for 17 years. She was accepted into the Dental Hygiene Program last fall after taking evening classes at the College to fulfill her prerequisites. After earning her degree in May, she plans to work in her field as a dental hygienist. She also hopes to continue building a partnership between the College and Norristown Borough.
“I think it’s important to give back to our communities and our schools,” Kimberly said. “We’ve taken, so we should also give something back.”
