During that time, he coached the University’s fencing team and completed a nearly two-year internship with the United States Secret Service.
After traveling extensively across Europe, Mr. Johnson returned to the U.S. to continue teaching and to begin his doctoral work. He is currently completing a Ph.D. in European History at Temple University.
Mr. Johnson’s studies focus on Modern Europe, specifically the fields of German, military, and environmental history. His master’s degree research examined the motivations of men who joined combat SS units in World War II. He recently completed all course work and examinations for his doctorate; his doctoral dissertation will analyze the environmental effects of German chemical weapons during the First World War.
Mr. Johnson joined the faculty of Montgomery County Community College in 2006. Here at MCCC, he teaches Medieval and Modern European history courses, including a course on the Holocaust. In December 2008, Mr. Johnson and his students visited the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. He is also the co-founder of the Montgomery County Community College Book Club, which will be starting its third semester this spring. This summer Mr. Johnson will be in Germany conducting research on German chemical warfare in Berlin, Potsdam, and Freiburg.
