Fostering a Successful Learning Community
for STEM Scholars
Montgomery County Community College has been awarded a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the amount of $600,000 to support scholarships in the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, called STEM disciplines. The project is designed to increase enrollment and student success in the STEM disciplines by providing full scholarships, faculty and industry professional mentoring, collaborative events, and career awareness activities for students.
The grant project provides for activities and support systems for STEM scholars in the following programs at the College: Astronomy, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Computer Networking, Computer Science, Electronic Game and Simulation Design, Engineering, Geology, Geosciences, Mathematics, and Physics. Scholars are assigned a faculty mentor and are integrated into a collaborative STEM learning community that reflects both their specific area of study and other inter-disciplinary majors.
The grant provides for 140 scholarships (20 in year 2008-2009 and 40 in the following three years) to academically-talented, financially-eligible STEM students. More than 35 STEM-related faculty and administrators will work collaboratively with the students to ensure best practices along with professional input from industry and educational partners to advance the understanding of and interest in the STEM disciplines outside of the classroom.
